\nThe African Development Bank (AfDB.org), in collaboration with the
\ngovernment of Nigeria, has held a meeting with stakeholders to discuss
\ndetails around Special Agro-Industrial Processing Zones in Nigeria.<\/p>\n

A workshop was held in Abuja from 17 to 18 February to address the
\ncategorization and location of the SAPZs, which are meant to kickstart
\nthe agriculture sector.<\/p>\n

Speaking at the event, Nigeria\u2019s Minister for Agriculture and Rural
\nDevelopment, Alhaji Sabo Nanono, lauded the efforts of the African
\nDevelopment Bank and called for all hands to be on deck in the
\nsustainable implementation of the initiative.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am proud that the SAPZ project is taking off, with strong
\ncollaboration with the African Development Bank. The project is indeed a
\npromising one for the future of agriculture in Nigeria,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The well-attended forum presented all stakeholders with the opportunity
\nto follow up on outcomes of previous design interventions. The workshop
\nwas attended, among others, by Afreximbank, the International Finance
\nCorporation, the Food and Agriculture Organization, the Development Bank
\nof Nigeria and the Small and Medium Enterprise Development Agency of
\nNigeria.<\/p>\n

The Senior Special Adviser to the President of the African Development
\nBank, Oyebanji Oyeyinka-Oyelaran, outlined the strategy for Nigeria,
\nsaying it would focus on developing key value chains and select the most
\npromising agricultural clusters.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe strategy will also promote inclusivity, have a positive multiplier
\neffect in the zones of influence, by increasing yields through the use
\nof modern technologies \u2013 improved seed, fertilizers, mechanization,
\ndigitization, irrigation and maximize positive engagement of youth and
\nwomen,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

He further explained that value addition through better handling of
\npost-harvest losses and processing of the commodities would be a key
\nfeature of this program in order to boost competitiveness.<\/p>\n

Special Agro-Industrial Processing Zones are integrated development
\ninitiatives designed to concentrate agro-processing activities within
\nareas of high agricultural potential to boost productivity, integrate
\nproduction, processing and marketing of selected commodities.<\/p>\n

These zones enable agricultural producers, processors, aggregators and
\ndistributors to operate in the same vicinity to reduce transaction costs
\nand share business development services for increased productivity and
\ncompetitiveness.<\/p>\n

By bringing adequate infrastructure (energy, water, roads, ICT) to rural
\nareas of high agricultural potential, SAPZs attract investments from
\nprivate agro-industrialists\/entrepreneurs to contribute to the economic
\nand social development of rural areas.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe establishment of SAPZs in Nigeria will boost the structural
\ntransformation of the economy by providing opportunities for public and
\nprivate sector investment in agriculture,\u201d said Ebrima Faal, Senior
\nDirector for the African Development Bank in Nigeria.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen fully operational, the SAPZs will enhance national food and
\nnutritional security, optimize the export of value-added agricultural
\ncommodities and improve the quality of livelihoods through wealth
\ncreation for rural farming communities,\u201d he added.<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
