The Nigerian government has explained why it is not isolating travellers<\/div>\n

coming into the country.<\/p>\n

Briefing reporters on Friday in Abuja, the Minister of Health, Dr Osagie
\nEhanire, attributed the government\u2019s action to the recommendation of the
\nWorld Health Organisation (WHO).<\/p>\n

He gave the briefing in company with the Minister of State for Health,
\nOlorunnimbe Mamora, and top officials of the Federal Ministry of Health,
\nfollowing the outbreak of coronavirus in Lagos.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe question of quarantine; the World Health Organisation advises
\neverybody, all countries that there is no need to put every single
\ntraveller into quarantine,\u201d the minister revealed.<\/p>\n

He added, \u201cThere are some other countries who choose to do differently
\nbut we followed the guidelines of the World Health Organisation which
\nstates that \u2018screen all persons who are entering your country, take
\ntheir travel history; if they are coming from a country that has a
\nburden of coronavirus, invite them for further questioning.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ehanire noted that the United Nations agency recommended that newly
\narrived travellers should also be advised to stay in isolation for 14
\ndays, in the interest of their family and loved ones.<\/p>\n

He stressed that the government has been working very closely with the
\nWHO \u2013 the global body monitoring public health situations and security,
\nas well as giving health advisory to various nations.<\/p>\n

The minister revealed that they have organised training for health
\nworkers on how to enlighten the public and prevent themselves from
\ngetting infected when treating coronavirus patients.<\/p>\n

He stated that they were stepping up efforts at the international
\nairports as preventive measures have been taken even before the first
\ncase was recorded in the country.<\/p>\n

Ehanire said, \u201cOur focus is on the four cities with international
\nairports \u2013 Abuja, Lagos, Port Harcourt and Kano; the Enugu Airport has
\nbeen closed and I understand it will be opened very soon.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe WHO warned just a day before that all countries should brace
\nthemselves for possible spread of coronavirus into their states and
\nsince then, we have continued beefing up our own security.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe second thing that they said is that coronavirus symptoms may not
\nmanifest with the first several days; the person who gets infected may
\nnot show any signs within the first few days (three to five days).<\/p>\n

\u201cSo, the gentleman who came here apparently may have gotten infected at
\nthe point but walked through the screening with no symptoms and by the
\ntime he got to his house, he started to feel unwell,\u201d he confirmed.<\/p>\n

The minister explained that the patient tested negative for malaria at
\nthe hospital after which the officials contacted the appropriate
\nauthorities, having known his history.<\/p>\n

He added that the Italian was referred to the testing centre at the
\nLagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) where he tested positive to
\ncoronavirus.<\/p>\n

Ehanire noted that the patient had been isolated from the referral
\nhospital in a special ambulance where the driver was well-kitted.<\/p>\n

He, however, refused to disclose the identity of the patient and the
\ncompany he works with, saying that would be done based on seeking their
\npermission.<\/p>\n

The minister stressed that the case recorded was not as a result of
\nfailed screening, stressing that the process went well without any
\nglitch.<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
