The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has accused the Presidency of not
\n\u2018being alive\u2019 to its responsibilities by failing to take necessary steps
\nto avoid the entrance of Coronavirus into the country.<\/p>\n
Nigerians woke up to the news on Friday that the first case of the
\nCoronavirus disease (COVID-19) was brought into the country by an
\nItalian.<\/p>\n
According to the Minister of Health, Dr Osagie Ehanire who confirmed the
\ndevelopment, the Italian citizen whose identity is yet to be revealed,
\nworks in Nigeria and just returned from Milan on the 25th of February
\n2020.<\/p>\n
Dr Ehanire explained that travelers were not isolated due to the
\nrecommendation of the World Health Organisation (WHO), adding that the
\nUnited Nations agency stated that newly arrived travelers should also be
\nadvised to stay in isolation for 14 days, in the interest of their
\nfamily and loved ones.<\/p>\n
The PDP in a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Kola
\nOlogbondiyan, on Friday, berated the Buhari Presidency for its
\nnegligence and laidback attitude, stressing that \u201ca responsive and
\nproactive government would have mobilized effective surveillance and
\nscreening measures to ward off the menace.\u201d<\/p>\n
The party noted that the welfare of Nigerians should be highly placed,
\nbut no concrete steps were taken to hedge the country against the virus,
\nleading to the current scary situation.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe PDP notes that a responsive and proactive government would have
\nmobilized effective surveillance and screening measures to ward off the
\nmenace, particularly at our entry points, but the incompetent,
\ninsensitive and indifferent Buhari administration, was more interested
\nin propaganda and unnecessary showboating with false performance claims.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe PDP said Nigerians should directly hold the Buhari Presidency
\nresponsible should any national calamity arose from COVID-19 in addition
\nto the economic and security challenges its negligence had caused our
\nnation.\u201d<\/p>\n
The PDP also added that Nigerians can no longer move freely across their
\ncountry for fear of insurgents, bandits, kidnappers, and now
\ncoronavirus.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe PDP, therefore, calls on Nigerians not to despair but stir up the
\nNigerian resilient spirit for an urgent, multi-sectoral concerted effort
\nby agencies, groups, corporate entities, and public-spirited individuals
\nto immediately curb the disease before it spreads, particularly given
\nthe prevalent security, economic and humanitarian challenges in the
\ncountry.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe party called on the Federal Government to end its cosmetic attitude
\nand immediately adopt the proactive strategy used by the PDP
\nadministration to promptly contain the Ebola Virus disease in 2014,\u201d the
\nstatement read in parts.<\/p>\n
