{"id":72003,"date":"2020-03-02T18:09:00","date_gmt":"2020-03-02T17:09:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/?p=72003"},"modified":"2020-03-02T18:09:00","modified_gmt":"2020-03-02T17:09:00","slug":"uba-records-13-earnings-growth-and-delivers-n111billion-profit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/news\/uba-records-13-earnings-growth-and-delivers-n111billion-profit\/","title":{"rendered":"UBA Records 13% Earnings Growth and Delivers N111billion Profit"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"m#msg-f:1660068901442547240\" class=\"mail-message expanded\">\n<div class=\"mail-message-header spacer\">Pan-African financial institution, United Bank for Africa Plc (UBA) has<\/div>\n<div class=\"mail-message-content collapsible zoom-normal mail-show-images \">\n<div class=\"clear\">announced its audited results for the full-year ended December 2019,<br \/>\nrecording impressive growth across top and bottom lines.<\/p>\n<p>According to the 2019 financials filed at the Nigerian Stock Exchange<br \/>\n(NSE) on Friday February 28, 2020, the Africa\u2019s global bank\u2019s gross<br \/>\nearnings grew by 13.3 percent to N559.8 billion, compared to N494.0<br \/>\nbillion recorded in the corresponding period of 2018. The Bank\u2019s total<br \/>\nassets also grew significantly by 15.1 percent to an unprecedented N5.6<br \/>\ntrillion for the year under review. This is the first time the Bank\u2019s<br \/>\ngross earnings and assets will respectively cross the N500billion and<br \/>\nN5trillion marks.<\/p>\n<p>Notwithstanding the challenging business environment in Nigeria, the<br \/>\nBank\u2019s Profit Before Tax was impressive at N111.3 billion, compared to<br \/>\nN106.8 billion at the end of the 2018 financial year. Furthermore, the<br \/>\nProfit After Tax rose by 13.3 percent to N89.1 billion compared to N78.6<br \/>\nbillion recorded in 2018. On the cost side, Operating Expenses grew by<br \/>\n10.1 percent to N217.2 billion, as against N197.3 billion in 2018, well<br \/>\nbelow average inflation rate within the period, a reflection of cost<br \/>\nefficiency gains.<\/p>\n<p>These results depict the Bank\u2019s deepening of its Pan-African business<br \/>\nstrategy, given the growth in the contribution of its 19 African<br \/>\nsubsidiaries to the Group\u2019s net earnings and total assets. Ex-Nigeria<br \/>\nOperations\u2019 contributed 46% to the Group\u2019s Profit Before Tax(PBT) in the<br \/>\nyear under review.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, UBA has been deploying innovative lifestyle products to<br \/>\nexpand its market share across Sub-Saharan Africa, leveraging its<br \/>\npresence in the United Kingdom, United States of America and France, to<br \/>\nbuild a true Africa\u2019s Global Bank, facilitating trade and capital flows<br \/>\nbetween Africa and the rest of the world.<\/p>\n<p>In its tradition of rewarding shareholders, the Bank proposed a final<br \/>\ndividend of 80 kobo for every ordinary share of 50 kobo for the<br \/>\nfinancial year ended December 31, 2019. The final dividend which is<br \/>\nsubject to the affirmation of the shareholders at its Annual General<br \/>\nMeeting will bring the total dividend for the year to N1.00, as the Bank<br \/>\nhad paid an interim dividend of 20 kobo earlier in the year.<\/p>\n<p>UBA recorded a remarkable 20.2 percent growth (to N2.1 trillion) in<br \/>\nloans to customers, whilst customer deposits increased by 14.4 percent<br \/>\nto N3.8 trillion, compared to N3.3 trillion recorded in the<br \/>\ncorresponding period of 2018. This reflects increased customer<br \/>\nconfidence, enhanced customer experience, early wins from the ongoing<br \/>\nbusiness transformation programme and the deepening of its retail<br \/>\nbanking franchise.<\/p>\n<p>Commenting on the result, the Group Managing Director\/CEO, Kennedy Uzoka<br \/>\nnoted that the year 2019 was important for UBA Group, as it gained<br \/>\nfurther market share in most of its countries of operation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe year 2019 was a very remarkable one for UBA given the adverse<br \/>\nmarket developments. Nonetheless, we achieved sizable growth in balance<br \/>\nsheet and earnings, even as we reposition the Bank for the future. Gross<br \/>\nearnings crossed the N500 billion threshold to N559billion, whilst total<br \/>\nassets also crossed the N5 trillion mark for the first time to<br \/>\nN5.6trillion. Our strategy remains centred around unparalleled service<br \/>\nto our esteemed customers. Accordingly, we are making significant<br \/>\ninvestments in a technology-driven transformation journey.\u00a0 We have<br \/>\nrecorded early gains as shown in the 39% growth in electronic banking<br \/>\nincome to N38.8bn in 2019 from N27.9bn in 2018. Our businesses are<br \/>\ngaining commendable share in their markets across regions in Africa, as<br \/>\nwe deepen the scale and scope of our operations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Continuing, Uzoka said; \u201cI am indeed excited about the synergy we have<br \/>\nbuilt within the UBA Group and the significant progress we have made in<br \/>\nour transformation drive. We have positioned the Bank as a truly<br \/>\npan-African banking franchise, leveraging our operations in France, the<br \/>\nUK and the USA, to deepen intra-African trade, and facilitate capital<br \/>\nflows between Africa and the rest of the world. In 2020, we will pursue<br \/>\naggressive deepening of market share in all our subsidiaries, leveraging<br \/>\ntechnology, rich human resources and our customer-first strategy to win<br \/>\nin all the markets we operate, notwithstanding the challenges of our<br \/>\noperating environment\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Also speaking on the performance, the Group CFO, Ugo Nwaghodoh<br \/>\nemphasized that the Bank well-positioned to sustain impressive<br \/>\nperformance across key financial indices, adding that already, some of<br \/>\nits previous investment in digital and technological transformation is<br \/>\nalready paying off significantly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe navigated the fragile yield environment in our largest market, to<br \/>\ndeliver an 8% growth in net interest income to N221.9billion. This was<br \/>\nbolstered by a 7.8% and 13.9% growth in interest income from corporate<br \/>\nloans and investment securities respectively, as well as a 4.0% cost of<br \/>\nfunds driven by our stable retail deposits. Resulting from cost<br \/>\nefficiency gains within the year, cost-to-income ratio moderated to<br \/>\n62.7% (64% in 2018), whilst profit for the year grew 13.3%, to<br \/>\nN89.1billion, translating to 16.2% return on average equity (RoAE),\u201d<br \/>\nNwaghodoh said.<\/p>\n<p>United Bank for Africa Plc is a leading Pan-African financial<br \/>\ninstitution, offering diverse banking and payments services to more than<br \/>\neighteen (18) million customers, across 1,000 business offices and<br \/>\ncustomer touch points in 20 African countries.
