\nASSOCIATION OF NIGERIA (HURIWA) has described as a “mass suicidal”
\ntendency the government’s deliberate failure to take concrete actions to
\nstave off and contain the spread of the coronavirus in the country.
\nHURIWA lamented the lack of political will power and the right
\nleadership at both national and subnational levels in Nigeria to
\nmobilize Nigerians and enlighten them along the lines of what they are
\nsupposed to do in the current severe medical emergency created by the
\nemergence of COVID-19.<\/p>\n
Besides, the Rights group has asked civil Rights bodies and Nigerians of
\nmeans to institute\u00a0 fundamental Rights enforcement processes against the
\nFederal government at the FEDERAL HIGH COURTS to obtain declaratory
\norders mandating President Muhammadu Buhari to personally address the
\nnation, close the land borders and impose strict travel bans for people
\ncoming in from jurisdictions with unprecedented cases of the new
\npandemic. “The Right to life is sacrosanct and inalienable but it is one
\nof the first generation rights that can not be recovered the moment the
\ncitizen is dead. This is the time to use all lawful means to force
\nPresident Muhammadu Buhari to embrace responsible, responsive and
\nreceptive political approach to confront the biggest health emergency
\nthe World has seen in the last 100 years.<\/p>\n
“We totally condemn the poor attitudes of the federal government;
\nPresident Muhammadu Buhari particularly and the painful non-challant
\ntendencies of virtually all the key federal and state governmental
\nofficials who are behaving as if they are paid to allow the coronavirus
\nto become widespread in the country before any concrete measures can be
\nadopted. This attitude is at best the type you see in persons who are
\nbent on embarking on “mass suicides.”<\/p>\n
“Why will the federal government insists on allowing all kinds of
\ntravels into Nigeria even from nations whereby the unfortunate pandemic

\nstep when even developed societies with the best of technologies and
\nmedical facilities in Europe, America, and Australia have imposed one
\ntype of restrictions on travels or the other? This is outrageous and

\ntill now, the current president has not thought it wise to personally
\naddress Nigeria. This is scandalous. Nations like Kenya, Namibia, South
\nAfrica, Ghana, and Senegal amongst others have had their presidents
\nactively take the driving seats in the fight against coronavirus but in
\nNigeria it is as if we are political orphans. NIGERIAN PRESIDENT MAY
\nHABE TO BE COMPELLED BY COURT ORDERS TO SPEAK TO NIGERIANS.”<\/p>\n
“The Federal Government says it has no plans to impose travel
\nrestrictions on visitors from countries where coronavirus continues to
\nspread rapidly. Tbis piece of ibformation as far as HUMAN RIGHTS WRITERS
\nASSOCIATION OF NIGERIA (HURIWA) is concerned is insanely irrational to
\nhave been made by our government at this perilous time of coronavirus.
\nHURIWA believes that the decision by Nigeria\u00a0 to casually screen
\nvisitors entering the country from China (where the disease originated
\nlast year), Japan, Iran, Italy, Germany, France, South Korea and Spain
\nis a national scandal and a monumental disgrace. This current suicidal
\ngovernment must be called to order immediatelly. Nigerians must speak
\nout so we are not led astray by a rudderless government .”<\/p>\n

\nstringent travel ban imposed”<\/p>\n

\nbarred some foreigners from entering and will close schools; Eurooean
