President Muhammadu Buhari Thursday in Abuja directed the Minister of
\nCommunications and Digital Economy to work with all relevant government
\nagencies to ensure full protection of critical national infrastructure.The President issued the directive at the unveiling of the National
\nBroadband Plan 2020\u20132025, commissioning of the Communications and
\nDigital Economy complex, flag-off of the Digital Innovation and
\nEntrepreneurship Training and launching of the Abuja Emergency
\nCommunication Centre and the National Emergency Toll-Free Number 112.<\/p>\n

The President also urged mobile network operators to ensure full
\nattainment of the targets set in the National Broadband Plan by giving
\nspecial attention to un-served and underserved areas while deploying
\ntheir services.<\/p>\n

President Buhari expressed concern about the challenges faced by
\noperators in the country, particularly vandalism of telecommunications
\nequipment.<\/p>\n

He assured the operators of government’s commitment to ensuring that all
\nstakeholders have a conducive environment to ensure the successful
\nimplementation of the Broadband Plan, which seeks to boost broadband
\npenetration as well as support the deployment of 4G across the country.<\/p>\n

On the newly commissioned Emergency Communications Centre and Toll Free
\nNumber 112, the President explained that it further demonstrates his
\nadministration’s resolve to keep Nigerians safe.<\/p>\n

”We have taken advantage of digital technologies to ensure that
\nNigerians in distress are only a dial away from the relevant emergency
\nresponse institutions in the country.<\/p>\n

”This will go a long way in supporting our efforts to improve the
\nsecurity of lives and property,” he said.<\/p>\n

On the Digital Nigeria Programme, President Buhari explained that it is
\none of Federal Government’s key initiatives to empower innovators and
\nentrepreneurs with skills required to thrive in the emerging digital
\neconomy.<\/p>\n

” It is part of our efforts to ensure that our youths, women,
\nunemployed graduates and people living with disabilities either become
\nemployers of labour or get a large number of well-paying jobs thereby
\ncontributing to the national drive of lifting Nigerians out of
\npoverty,” he said.<\/p>\n

Similarly, President Buhari declared that the newly commissioned
\nCommunications and Digital Economy Complex will provide a befitting
\ncoordinating centre for the new focus on the Nigerian Digital Economy.<\/p>\n

”It signals the desire to intensify efforts towards ensuring that
\nNigeria becomes an active participant in the Global Digital Economy,”
\nhe said.<\/p>\n

Earlier, the President acknowledged that the dwindling price of crude
\noil had adversely affected budgetary projections and increased the sense
\nof urgency to diversify the economy.<\/p>\n

He, however, expressed delight that the projects commissioned would
\nenhance the development of the National Digital Economy and support
\nefforts at diversifying the economy.<\/p>\n

According to President Buhari ” The Digital Economy will also support
\nus in fighting corruption through digitalization and enabling government
\ndigital services.<\/p>\n

”Digital technologies have become a useful platform for economic
\ndiversification. Having recognized the benefits of these technologies we
\nhave decided to adopt the Digital Economy paradigm early,” he said.<\/p>\n

The President also commended the Minister of Communications and Digital
\nEconomy, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), the Presidential
\nCommittee and all stakeholders who participated in the development of
\nthe National Broadband Plan, lauding the leadership of the Ministry for
\nthe high level of synergy amongst the parastatals under its supervision.<\/p>\n

In his remarks, the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr
\nIsa Ali Ibrahim Pantami said broadband penetration is key to reviving
\nthe Nigerian economy.<\/p>\n

Citing reports from the World Bank and the World Economic Forum, the
\nMinister said 10 per cent broadband penetration in any country will
\nimprove its GDP by at least 4.6 per cent.<\/p>\n

With coronavirus spreading across the globe and more people living in
\nisolation, the minister said the digital and information communication
\nsector is providing alternatives for people to stay in touch and
\ninstitutions to provide the needed basic life-saving services to the
\npopulace.<\/p>\n

On his part, the Executive Vice Chairman of the NCC, Prof Umar Danbatta
\nannounced that the country’s broadband penetration had increased to 38.5
\nper cent.<\/p>\n

”As at the time this government came into power in 2015, broadband
\npenetration was hovering between 4 and 6 per cent. Broadband penetration
\nhas now reached 38.5 per cent, ” he said.<\/p>\n

Danbatta explained that the Digital Complex building accommodates the
\noffice of the Minister, permanent secretary of the Ministry and four
\ndepartments of the Commission.<\/p>\n

He added that the 5-storey building with two basement floors sit on 8
\nhectares of land at the Mbora district, Abuja and is equipped with
\nmodern telecommunications facility, a cr\u00e8che for nursing mothers,
\ngymnasium, among others.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
