The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC,\u00a0 has again cautioned
\nmembers of the public against unsupported claims of fraudulent operators
\nadvertising cures and treatments of the dreaded Covid-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n
The Commission is also urging the general public to be wary of fake
\ncharities springing up purporting to offer guidelines on donations to
\ngovernment and ordinary Nigerians in a bid to cope with the discomfort
\narising out of COVID- 19.<\/p>\n
The Acting Executive Chairman of the EFCC, Ibrahim Magu who disclosed
\nthe latest development on Wednesday, April 8, 2020, added that there was
\nneed for patriotic Nigerians to be cautious of fake Covid-19 ”
\nDo-it-yourself” tests and shun any fraudulent charities offering
\nguidelines on donations to the public.<\/p>\n
Magu particularly cautioned against use of unwanted mobile applications
\nfrom untrusted sources and fake multilevel marketing schemes with mouth-
\nwatering returns online.<\/p>\n
The EFCC boss said that “The Federal Government has rolled out account
\ndetails of accredited banks through which donations can be made.\u00a0 Please
\nnote that any other guideline for donations is fraudulent and should be
\nignored.<\/p>\n
Besides, members of the public should be cautious of online investment
\ninvolving various money-doubling schemes.\u00a0 We are tracking all those
\nfraudulent operators and we wish to assure Nigerians that we will bring
\nthem and their sponsors to book”.<\/p>\n
In a Statement made available on Wednesday by the Acting Spokesperson of
\nthe EFCC, Tony Orilade, the EFCC boss also advised Nigerians against
\nillegal “Robo Calls”.<\/p>\n
According to him, such calls are meant to scam and steal the banking
\ndetails of their victims.\u00a0 “Don’t press any number required by any
\nillegal Robo Call.\u00a0 The recording machine might require you to press a
\nnumber for you to speak with an operator.\u00a0 This is fraudulent.\u00a0 Don’t
\npress such a number”, he said.<\/p>\n
The EFCC boss further wants Nigerians to exercise extreme cautions over
\nthe following measures:
\n1.\u00a0 Don’t click on links from any source that you don’t know. Doing so
\ncould download Malware onto your computer or device.
\n2.\u00a0 Don’t let anyone rush you into making a donation. If someone wants
\ndonations done in cash or by wiring money into other personal account,
\ndon’t do it.
\n3.\u00a0 Be alert and vigilant about online promotions and investment
\nopportunities, especially on social media.<\/p>\n
Magu assures Nigerians that the EFCC is abreast of every economic and
\nfinancial crime fraudsters are developing in the wake of Covid-19
\npandemic saying that the Commission will burst any scheme designed to
\ndefraud Nigerians of their hard- earned money.<\/p>\n
