\nA Chief Magistrate Court in Port Harcourt on Tuesday granted bail to
\nSamuel Ugorji and Samuel Buhari,\u00a0 both pilots with Carveton Helicopters
\nwho were accused of contravening the Executive Order of the Rivers State
\nGovernor issued to check the spread of coronavirus in the State.<\/p>\n

The Magistrate Court also granted bail to 10 passengers of Carveton
\nHelicopters who were flown into Rivers State by the two pilots.<\/p>\n

Chief Magistrate D.D . Ihua-Maduenyi granted the two pilots bail after
\nhearing the bail application by their counsel.<\/p>\n

Chief Magistrate D.D . Ihua-Maduenyi in granting the two pilots bail
\nstated that they must present a surety who must be a management staff of
\nCarveton Helicopters.<\/p>\n

The Court ruled that the surety must own a landed property in Port
\nHarcourt and the surety must ensure that the two pilots attend trial.
\nHe added that the surety will sign a bail bond of N1million each for the
\ntwo pilots.<\/p>\n

Earlier, the court granted a motion abridging the time for the bail
\napplication to be filed following a motion moved by Carveton
\nHelicopters.\u00a0 It deemed the bail application\u00a0 as properly filed.<\/p>\n

He adjourned the matter to May 19, 2020 for trial.<\/p>\n

Lawyer to the Carveton Pilots,\u00a0 Nwokedi Ibe moved a bail application
\nseeking the court to grant the two pilots bail.<\/p>\n

His bail application dated April 8, 2020, but filed on April 9, 2020 was
\nsupported by a 28-paragraph affidavit.<\/p>\n

Attorney-General of Rivers State,\u00a0 Professor Zaccheus Adangor who
\nappeared for the State did not oppose the bail application.<\/p>\n

He,\u00a0 however, urged the Court to set out bail conditions to ensure that
\nthe pilots attend their trial.<\/p>\n

The 10 passengers who were granted bail include:<\/p>\n

2. PETER MICHAEL ‘M’AGED 43YRS<\/p>\n

3. AJAGBA IHEAYNI ‘M’ AGED 35YRS<\/p>\n

4. EKPEREWECHI OGUGUO ‘M’AGED 43YRS<\/p>\n

5. NSIKAN PIUS ‘M’ AGED 38YRS<\/p>\n

6. ABANOBI CHINOSO ‘M’AGED 27YRS<\/p>\n

7. UDOH HAGAN ‘M’AGED 28YRS<\/p>\n

8. OKACHUKWU CHUKS ‘M’ AGED 41YRS<\/p>\n

9. GODDY CHUKWU ‘M’AGED 42YRS<\/p>\n

10. OOMERURIKE CHIJIOKE ‘M’AGED 43YRS<\/p>\n

For the passengers,\u00a0 the Court ruled that they should present two
\nsureties who must be management staff of Carveton Helicopters . They
\nsureties are to sign bail bond of N500,000 for each of the passengers.
\nThey are to undertake to bring the accused persons trial.<\/p>\n

They were arrested at the Air Force Base , Port Harcourt after the
\nRivers State Police Command received intelligence on their illegal
\nflight into the State.<\/p>\n

Addressing journalists,\u00a0 Counsel to Carveton Helicopters, Nwokedi Ibe
\nsaid that the Basic lesson in the who interaction is that there must be
\nmutual respect between the Federal and State Governments.<\/p>\n

He said: “I want to use this medium to say there is need for mutual
\nrespect between the Federal Government and State Governments.\u00a0 The
\ndefendants have been granted bail.\u00a0 That is the essence of what happened
\nin Court.”<\/p>\n

Attorney-General of Rivers State,\u00a0 Professor Zaccheus Adangor said that
\nit must be noted that Rivers State Government is not interested in the
\npersecution of the defendants,\u00a0 hence it did not oppose the bail
\napplication.\u00a0 He said that the State Government is only interested in
\nprosecuting the defendants in line with the law.<\/p>\n

He said that the defendants will be released as soon as they perfect
\ntheir bail.<\/p>\n

It will be recalled that on April 7, a Port Harcourt Chief Magistrate
\nCourt\u00a0 remanded two pilots of Carveton Helicopters,\u00a0 Samuel Ugorji and
\nSamuel Buhari in prison custody, for\u00a0 allegedly intentionally disobeying
\nthe Executive Order issued by the Rivers State Governor aimed at
\nchecking the spread of coronavirus in the state.<\/p>\n

The Court presided over by Chief Magistrate D.D . Ihua-Maduenyi remanded
\nthe two pilots at the Delta Hotels , Old GRA,\u00a0 Port Harcourt after the
\nAttorney-General of Rivers State,\u00a0 Professor Zaccheus Adangor applied
\nfor that order.<\/p>\n

The Pilots who were arrested by the Rivers State Police Command were
\narraigned by the State Police Command via charge number:PMC\/532C\/2020.<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

President Muhammadu Buhari extends his good wishes to the people of
\nChibok, Borno State, as they hold prayers and thanksgiving services to
\nmark the sixth anniversary of the kidnapping of their daughters by Boko
\nHaram terrorist group.<\/p>\n

President Buhari regrets that the current Covid-19 pandemic, with
\nrestrictions on movement, makes it impossible for any government
\ndelegation to be with them during the event.<\/p>\n

He, however, assures the people of Chibok that he is still mindful of
\ntheir welfare and their concerns, especially regarding our daughters who
\nare still missing.<\/p>\n

On the specific issue of the freedom for the remaining girls held by the
\nterrorists, the President notes the ongoing efforts on two fronts:<\/p>\n

The armed forces of the country who are on general operations in the
\nentire region continue in their hope that they would encounter these
\ngirls, as they did thousands of other hostages, rescue and bring them
\nback home.<\/p>\n

The nation’s security and intelligence community, in whom a lot of hope,
\nis reposed in rescuing the abducted girls is making a lot of efforts
\nusing backroom channels to get them back to their families. These are
\nprocesses, formal and informal that involves different groups with links
\nto the terrorists, and are very tedious and uneasy as is seen in
\ndifferent parts of the world.<\/p>\n

“The issue of the Chibok girls is not a forgotten issue. We cannot go to
\nsleep over this matter. We are optimistic that\u00a0 ongoing efforts will
\nyield something positive,” President Buhari assured.<\/p>\n

Unfortunately, an ongoing crisis within the Boko Haram leadership, which
\nhas led to factions and breakaway groups, brought a number of unforeseen
\nchallenges to the process of negotiating with the militants for the
\nyoung women’s release.<\/p>\n

In the past few years, our armed forces have recorded huge successes in
\nthe battle against Boko Haram, but they have also been careful to ensure
\nthat as few civilian lives as possible were lost in the process. We
\nwould rather the young women still in captivity were freed alive.<\/p>\n

President Buhari also reflected on the progress being made by the freed
\n‘Chibok girls’, who were sponsored by his administration to study at the
\nAmerican University of Nigeria (AUN), Yola, saying that he is proud of
\nwhat they are doing.<\/p>\n

He encourages them to remain focused on their studies and on this unique
\nopportunity that has been given to them by God, following their horrific
\ntime in captivity.<\/p>\n

President Buhari also commends Yakubu Nkeki, Lawan Zannah and Yana
\nGalang, the executive officials of the Association of the Parents of the
\nAbducted Girls from Chibok, on their steadfast efforts to advocate for
\nthe welfare of the parents, the freed women, and those still in
\ncaptivity.<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
