{"id":73174,"date":"2020-05-04T18:28:44","date_gmt":"2020-05-04T17:28:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/?p=73174"},"modified":"2020-05-04T18:28:44","modified_gmt":"2020-05-04T17:28:44","slug":"aliko-dangote-foundation-engages-54gene-laboratory-to-conduct-1000-covid-19-test-per-day-in-kano","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/news\/aliko-dangote-foundation-engages-54gene-laboratory-to-conduct-1000-covid-19-test-per-day-in-kano\/","title":{"rendered":"Aliko Dangote Foundation engages 54gene Laboratory to conduct 1,000 COVID-19 test per day in Kano"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"m#msg-f:1665781393980676733\" class=\"mail-message expanded\">\n<div class=\"mail-message-header spacer\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"mail-message-content collapsible zoom-normal mail-show-images \">\n<div class=\"clear\">\nThe Aliko Dangote Foundation (ADF) (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.dangote.com\/foundation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=http:\/\/www.Dangote.com\/foundation\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1588699338164000&amp;usg=AFQjCNF6zdJk2jwEkRyX5T-gRejEmYsmUg\">www.Dangote.com\/foundation\/<\/a>), a<br \/>\nphilanthropic endeavor of Aliko Dangote, has contracted 54Gene, a<br \/>\nmolecular diagnostics company specialized in research, and diagnostics,<br \/>\nto immediately set up a 400 test\/day capacity laboratory in Kano State.<\/p>\n<p>54Gene is accredited by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC),<br \/>\nand has already set up labs in Lagos and in Ogun States.<\/p>\n<p>The lab, which was inaugurated yesterday &#8211; May 3rd in Kano, will start<br \/>\nwith a testing capacity of 400 tests a day, increasing to 1,000 tests a<br \/>\nday by May 10th.<\/p>\n<p>The lab will be set up at Muhammadu Buhari Hospital in Kano, where an<br \/>\nisolation center is currently operational.<\/p>\n<p>The President\/Chief Executive of Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote said the<br \/>\nfoundation is directly supporting the Nigerian government\u2019s COVID-19<br \/>\ncontainment efforts in Kano State.<\/p>\n<p>According to Dangote, this new investment in support of increasing<br \/>\nnation-wide testing, comes in addition to ADF\u2019s support through the<br \/>\nPrivate Sector Coalition Against COVID-19 (CACOVID).<\/p>\n<p>He explained: \u201cCACOVID is already setting up a 310 bed isolation center<br \/>\nat Sani Abacha stadium in Kano. We are extending that capacity by<br \/>\nanother 150 beds at the Abubakar Imam Urology Centre in Kano, which is<br \/>\nbeing converted into an isolation center now. These two centers will be<br \/>\noperational pending the final validation by the Infection Prevention and<br \/>\nControl team, which we expect will be completed in the coming days.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dangote pledged the Foundation&#8217;s commitment to reduce the number of<br \/>\nlives lost to diseases, such as COVID-19, Ebola and other deadly viruses<br \/>\nin the State.<\/p>\n<p>He said the foundation would not relent in using its investments in<br \/>\nhealth, education, and economic empowerment to help lift people out of<br \/>\nsickness and poverty.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking on the efforts of the Foundation to assist the Federal<br \/>\nGovernment in curtailing the spread of COVID-19, the Managing<br \/>\nDirector\/Chief Executive Officer of ADF, Zouera Youssoufou, added that<br \/>\nADF is also supporting the Rapid Response Teams in their work to<br \/>\nidentify suspected covid-19 cases across the healthcare centers in Kano.<br \/>\n\u201cADF will immediately handover to the Kano RRT, 10 new ambulances (4<br \/>\nthat ae immediately available and 6 over the next week), two vehicles<br \/>\nand PPEs to support the transportation of patients from different parts<br \/>\nof the state\u201d, she said.<\/p>\n<p>She said that the Foundation is also supporting the Kano State Covid-19<br \/>\ncontact call center that responds to citizen queries and concerns around<br \/>\nCovid-19 and refers people to the proper place for follow up, by<br \/>\nproviding extra phone lines and ICT infrastructure as well as training<br \/>\nfor the call center staff.<\/p>\n<p>On training, she disclosed: \u201cWe are supporting training and incentives<br \/>\nfor covid-19 health workers.\u00a0 We will provide hazard incentives and<br \/>\nprotections for the healthcare and lab workers who are working on the<br \/>\ncovid-19 response. We are also providing training to them, initially<br \/>\nonline and via distance learning, and will complement his with in-person<br \/>\ntraining in Kano under strict IPC protocols developed in conjunction<br \/>\nwith the NCDC.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cADF will continue to provide PPEs to the Kano State Covid-19 Taskforce,<br \/>\nwhich will then be distributed to the hospitals as appropriate. Items<br \/>\nalready supplied include coveralls, gloves, masks, respirators, goggles,<br \/>\nboots and sanitizers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are expanding the CACOVID communications strategy in Kano by adding<br \/>\nmore communications and advocacy around Covid-19 prevention across<br \/>\nradio, TV and traditional and community leaders.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Commending ADF, Kano State Governor, Abdullahi Ganduje stated: \u201cThere\u2019s<br \/>\nno doubt we started on a shaky foundation, with assistance of ADF, we<br \/>\ncan see that a friend in deed is a friend in need. We are very grateful<br \/>\nfor the mobile testing Centre witch will launch with 400 samples per day<br \/>\nand after a week, increase to 1,000 tests\u00a0 per day.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is now left for us to intensify efforts to collect samples. We will<br \/>\nensure that all that 44 Local Government Council have collection<br \/>\ncentres.\u00a0 Here in the metropolitan local government, we will have 100s<br \/>\nof collection centres because this is where the majority of the<br \/>\npopulation is\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The governor added that the state has intensify efforts to create<br \/>\nawareness about the reality of coronavirus.<\/p>\n<p>He commended the Dangote Foundation for always occupying the forefront<br \/>\nof helping in critical times like this.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking on the collaboration, the founder and Chief Executive Officer<br \/>\nof 54gene, Dr. Abasi Ene-Obong, the 40ft structure built with container<br \/>\ntechnology, provides a unique plug-and-play solution.<\/p>\n<p>Ene-Obong explained that the mobile laboratory is also fully kitted with<br \/>\nvital instruments including an autoclave, bio-safety cabinet,<br \/>\ncentrifuge, heating blocks, vortexes, pipettes, and PCR machines to<br \/>\nsupport COVID-19 testing.<\/p>\n<p>He stated: \u201cOur mobile lab is fully equipped with all the vital<br \/>\ninstruments required for COVID-19 testing, and allows us to quickly<br \/>\noffer our services to multiple states due to the ease of transport.
