Sequel to a long restructuring process, the American University of
\nNigeria (AUN), Yola, Adamawa, has disengaged the services of about 400
\nof its staff.<\/p>\n
Prof. Abba Tahir, the Vice President for University Relations, AUN, made
\nthe disclosure in a statement made available to newsmen in Yola on
\nTuesday.<\/p>\n
Tahir said that majority of the affected personnel were those that had
\nno significant developmental effect on the philosophy of the university.<\/p>\n
\u201cCertain structural elements have been initiated by the new Governing
\nCouncil of American University of Nigeria (AUN), in response to NUC
\nrequirements, mandating the institution to align with an approved
\ngovernance structure for all tertiary institutions in the country.<\/p>\n
\u201dUntil now, AUN has operated a student-staff ratio which balance had
\ncontinued to affect the sustainability of the university.<\/p>\n
\u201dThis is clearly an uncommon and hardly workable tradition in all
\ninstitutions and organisations around the world. Obviously it is
\nunattainable.<\/p>\n
\u201dThus, consequent upon the university\u2019s new governing council vote to
\nrestructure the institution in line with its agenda for sustainability,
\na process of workforce rationalisation has been in the pipeline.<\/p>\n
\u201dIt is now time for the university to look back, look around and look
\nahead, to ensure that realistic and globally competitive administrative
\npractices can be achieved in structure, strategy and focus.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt would not be realistic for AUN to continue to anchor its
\nadministrative structure on an over-bloated personnel whose role do not
\nhave significant effect on the philosophy of a development university,\u201d
\nhe said.<\/p>\n
The vice president for university relaions further stated that in the
\nemerging sustainable structure, competitive personnel were retained,
\nwhile others were disengaged honourably.<\/p>\n
He said that all those affected were paid all their contractual benefits
\nat the point of clearance, to continue with their lives somewhere else.<\/p>\n
Tahir said that as a typical American style institution, AUN
\ndeliberately trained its students to search for sustainable solutions to
\nhuman development challenges.<\/p>\n
\u201dStudents are deliberately armed with lifelong skills and competencies
\nto develop sustainable solutions to the myriad of challenges faced by
\nsociety.<\/p>\n
\u201dThe challenges posed by the unsustainable redundancies in AUN\u2019s
\noperational structure for the university is one that needed to be
\naddressed ever since,\u201d Tahir said.<\/p>\n
