Ikechukwu Aduba, Delta Commissioner of Police, on Tuesday said that the command was not party to any negotiation for ransom over the kidnap of Prof. Kamene Okonjo.<\/p>\n
He said that two policemen who were supposed to be on duty when Okonjo, mother of Finance Minister, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala was kidnapped had been arrested and detained following investigation.<\/p>\n
Aduba, who spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Asaba, said that the police was not aware of any negotiation for ransom.<\/p>\n
According to him, the command is not in support of giving ransom to the hoodlums.<\/p>\n
NAN recalls that Okonjo, the Wife of Prof. Chukwuka Okonjo, the Obi of Ogwashishi-Uku in Aniocha South Local Government Area was kidnapped on Sunday afternoon at the palace.<\/p>\n
“As far as I am concerned the issues of ransom in the newspapers are all stories. And I don\u2019t like telling stories.<\/p>\n
“I deal with facts. We have spread our dragnets to ensure we get these hoodlums.
\n“Issues of ransom, we are not involved and we have never supported it.<\/p>\n
“We cannot cover up anybody, investigations were carried out and the two police officers who were supposed to be on duty are now in detention,\u2019\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n
Aduba said that there were usually insiders in every issue of kidnapping, bank robberies, among others.<\/p>\n
He said that the state command had strengthened its artilleries, which led to the arrest of 20 armed kidnapers in the past few days.<\/p>\n
“But for me, we have been doing our best, the state criminal investigation and the State Anti Robbery Squad (SARS) have been able to round up 20 kidnappers of four separate gang.<\/p>\n
“We rescued some victims yesterday at Akukwu-Igbo in Oshimili North Local Government Area.<\/p>\n
“Also Thursday last week, we intercepted a gang of kidnappers that were heading toward Ogwashi-Uku and we recovered their guns.<\/p>\n
“There is a 24-hour patrol in this state and within five minutes of getting distress a call we are there, the kidnap of the Queen is an unfortunate incident,\u2019\u2019 Aduba said.
\nThe commissioner reiterated that those with “hostage value\u2019\u2019 should be very careful and watch their backs.<\/p>\n
He advised them to endeavour to report any suspicious movement around them.
\nHe said that security was the responsibility of all, not only for the police force.
