The Christian Rights Agenda (CRA) has condemned, in strongest terms, an
\ninsult on the Christian faith by Mr. Abdulkareem Jamiu Asuku, the Chief
\nof Staff to Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello.<\/p>\n

Mr. Asuku who, on Radio Kogi 93.5 FM on Monday, while discussing a
\nlingering quarrel among Muslims in Ebiraland over which sect produces
\nthe Chief Imam of a mosque in Okene, veered off the context of the
\ndiscussion by alluding to denominations in Christianity.<\/p>\n

He compared the dichotomy among the Islamic sects to Christian
\ndenominations, and disparaging Christians for not being true followers
\nof Jesus Christ.<\/p>\n

In a statement signed by its Acting Director of Publicity, Tom
\nChiahemen, CRA argued that Mr. Asuku’s comments were not only an insult
\non Christianity, but they also epitomized the hatred and bigotry against
\nChristians in the government of Governor Yahaya Bello.<\/p>\n

The CRA is a Christian organization set up to advocate the respect for
\nthe rights of Christians in line with the principles of freedom of
\nreligion, thoughts and beliefs, enshrined in the 1999 Constitution of
\nthe Federal Republic of Nigeria.<\/p>\n

The statement said, “Kogi governor’s Chief of Staff’s comments steams of
\ndiscrimination, bigotry, hatred and the kind of bias that should not be
\nin the heart of a government official. The Bible says, “out of the
\nabundance of the heart the mouth speaketh” (Matthew 12:34).<\/p>\n

Apparently, this Chief of Staff spoke from the prevalent disposition of
\nthe government at Lugard House in Lokoja, and that is unfortunate. A
\ngovernment and those who run it should be all-embracing. Governor Yahaya
\nBello is not a governor of Muslims, except he wants to be seen to be so.
\nBut if his CoS is showing open disdain for the Christian faith, it means
\nthe administration is doomed.”<\/p>\n

The CRA added that “Christian denominations in Nigeria have not carried
\nout cold-blooded murders; massacre of innocent persons in villages and
\ncities; destruction of properties; raping of women, men and children;
\nhatred, and outright genocide that is the stock-in-trade of some
\nreligious groups in Nigeria. An evidence of this is the fact that
\nEbiraland is the hotbed of senseless sectarian and ethnic killings in
\nKogi State in spite of the fact that the majority of the people in that
\npart of the state belongs to one religion. Christianity does not
\nadvocate mass murder, hatred, and all the evils that manifest in
\nEbiraland.”
\nThe Christian organization added that “Christian denominations have,
\ninstead, fostered freedom, peace, trust, respect for each other, and
\neven led to development. In Nigeria, the Redeemed Christian Church of
\nGod is not at war with Deeper Life Christian Ministry; neither is the
\nBaptist Church at war with Methodist Church. Churches are not
\ndaggers-drawn at each other, unlike what happens in Okene over the
\nposition of Imam of the mosque.”<\/p>\n

The group called on Kogi State governor to change his bias towards
\nChristians in Kogi State, and counsel his staff against disparaging the
\nChristian faith in the name of settling a dispute among Islamic sects.<\/p>\n

The CRA\u00a0 maintained\u00a0 that contrary to Asuku’s disparaging insinuation,
\nthe various Christian denominations in Nigeria,\u00a0 as “true followers\u00a0 of
\nJesus Christ,”\u00a0 do not, and have always condemned,\u00a0 cold-blooded
\nmurders; massacre of innocent persons in villages and cities;
\ndestruction of properties; raping of women, men and children; hatred,
\nand outright genocide being reported in some parts of Nigeria.<\/p>\n

An evidence of this is the view of many Nigerians that Ebiraland is the
\nhotbed of senseless sectarian and ethnic killings in Kogi State in spite
\nof the fact that the majority of the people in that part of the state
\nbelongs to one religion.<\/p>\n

The CRA is of the candid opinion that instead of dissipating his energy
\ndisparaging Christianity, Governor Bello’s Chief of Staff, who ought to
\nhave been worried about this public perception of Ebiraland, should have
\nbeen finding ways of how to change the narrative.<\/p>\n

The Christian organization added that “Christian denominations have,
