The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has lamented<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

that the current government has dragged Nigeria backward in terms of all
\nidentifiable human development indices by about 60 years or more.<\/p>\n

The Rights group said the state of human rights violations in the past
\nfive years has assumed epic proportions just as impunity, lawlessness
\nand lack of respect for the sanctity of human life have become so
\nwidespread that much parts of Nigeria are currently in a state of civil
\nwar just as hundreds of armed mass killers are getting away with their
\ndastardly acts of genocides waged against communities all across the
\ncountry with the North-West and North-East of Nigeria becoming killing
\nfields.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe unfortunate scenario is that since the last five years top
\ngovernment officials have misused their powers to turn Nigeria into a
\npolice state thereby clamping journalists who write unfavourable news
\nstories into detentions with lots of framed up and trumped-up charges, \u201d
\nit said.<\/p>\n

In a statement signed on Friday in Abuja by the National Coordinator,
\nEmmanuel Onwubiko and the National Media Affairs Director, Zainab Yusuf,
\nHURIWA said that it was laughable that whereas the federal government
\nidentifies the armed Boko Haram insurgency group as terrorists, it has
\nrather chosen to treat armed Fulani herdsmen and the murderous attackers
\nin the North-West States of Zamfara, Katsina, Sokoto as mere armed
\nbandits.<\/p>\n

According to the Rights group, the statement by President Muhammadu
\nBuhari describing the killings of Christians and farmers in Southern
\nKaduna by armed Fulani herdsmen as a \u2018revenge attacks\u2019 does not
\ncommunicate to the global community that the central government is
\nwilling to crack down on all terrorists carrying out mass killings of
\nNigerians irrespective of their religious or ethnic orientations.<\/p>\n

HURIWA noted that: \u201cit is said that in the last five years, the current
\nadministration has treated with kid gloves the cases of coordinated
\nkillings orchestrated and choreographed by armed Fulani herdsmen in
\nBenue, Plateau, Enugu, Delta with the clear failure of either the
\nAttorney General and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami or the
\nInspector General of Police (IGP) Mohammed Adamu to prosecute and punish
\narmed Fulani herdsmen arrested with sophisticated weapons and paraded by
\nthe National Police in Abuja.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have a government that in the last five years has failed in the
\nbasic task of preventing mass killings and genocides. Sadly, whenever
\nthese suspected mass killers are arrested and are clearly shown to be
\nfrom the same ethnic-religious affiliations with the President which is
\nFulani, these numerous terrorists arrested with sophisticated weapons of
\nmass destruction and paraded to the media by the Inspector General of
\nPolice and before our very eyes the whole drama ends as media
\nshowmanship just as the exact whereabouts of these paraded armed Fulani
\nherdsmen are not disclosed to anyone and the spate of killings have
\ncontinued in an unending vicious circle of violent and blood cuddling
\nattacks.<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
