Mohammed of Federal High Court sitting in Port Harcourt,<\/div>\n<div class=\"mail-message-content collapsible zoom-normal mail-show-images \">\n<div class=\"clear\">Rivers State on Thursday May 28, 2020 convicted and sentenced one<br \/>\nIgweneme Moses(a.k.a. Griffith Doyle),\u00a0 to one year imprisonment for<br \/>\nconspiracy and money laundering.<\/p>\n<p>The convict, who defrauded his victim, Chantai Meadery in February 2018<br \/>\nthrough a dating scam,\u00a0 with a promise of &#8220;building a future together&#8221;<br \/>\nin Switzerland, was arraigned by the Port Harcourt Zonal Office of the<br \/>\nEconomic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on July 23, 2019 on a<br \/>\n4-count charge bordering on obtaining money by false pretence and money<br \/>\nlaundering.<\/p>\n<p>One of the counts reads: &#8220;That you Igweneme Moses and Igweneme Nkeiruka<br \/>\nBlessing (now at large)between the 13th and 26th March, 2018 directly<br \/>\ntook possession of the sum of $82,706,(Eight Two Thousand, Seven Hundred<br \/>\nand Six US Dollars) which you knew or reasonably ought to have known is<br \/>\nthe proceeds of an unlawful act, to wilt: obtaining under false pretence<br \/>\nfrom one Chantai Helene Meadery and thereby committed an offence<br \/>\ncontrary and punishable under Section 15(2) of Money<br \/>\nLaundering(Prohibition) Act, 2011 (As amended)&#8221;. The defendant initially<br \/>\npleaded &#8220;not guilty&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, in the course of the investigation, it was discovered that<br \/>\nthe convict used the pretext of fake emergency situations, to trick his<br \/>\nvictim in making a total of sixteen (16) transfers amounting to Two<br \/>\nHundred and Forty Thousand, Seven Hundred Dollars ($240,700) to the<br \/>\nconvict.<\/p>\n<p>The convict received all the money through his UBA account number<br \/>\n30020624272, a domiciliary joint account belonging to him and his<br \/>\ndaughter, Igweneme Nkeiruka Blessing. Further investigation also<br \/>\nrevealed that any time the domiciliary account was credited, Moses<br \/>\ntransfered the funds in United States dollars to a bureau de change<br \/>\noperator who will then transfer the Naira equivalent to his daughter via<br \/>\nUBA Naira account No. 2064404530.<\/p>\n<p>However, at the resumed hearing of the case on Thursday, Moses changed<br \/>\nhis plea to &#8220;guilty&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Upon his guilty plea, the prosecuting counsel, T. M. Iko, urged the<br \/>\ncourt to convict the defendant as charged and order the restitution of<br \/>\nthe total sum of Two Hundred and Forty Thousand US Dollars ($240,000) to<br \/>\nthe victim.<\/p>\n<p>Justice Mohammed consequently convicted Moses and sentenced him to one<br \/>\nyear imprisonment and ordered total restitution of the sum of Two<br \/>\nHundred and Forty Thousand US Dollars ($240,000) to the victim.<\/p>\n<p>The convict has so far returned the sum of One Hundred Thousand US<br \/>\nDollars (S100, 000) to the victim.<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"mail-message-footer spacer collapsible\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Related Posts generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Justice A.T.
