A 23-year-old lady, identified as Uwaila Omozuwa, has died at the<\/div>\n
\n
University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), Edo State after she was
\nbeaten and raped inside her local church.It was gathered that Uwaila, who was a 100-level Microbiology student of
\nUNIBEN, goes to read every day at The Redeemed Christian Church of God,
\nEdo Province 10, Ikpoba Hill, Benin, but was unfortunately beaten, raped
\nand hit with a fire extinguisher by unknown men on Wednesday, 27th May
\n2020.<\/p>\n

According to a source, \u201cThe church\u2019s security officer had gone to
\ncollect the keys to the church from its keeper when he was told that
\nthere was someone in the church already.<\/p>\n

“He got to the church only to find Uwaila in a pool of blood and next to
\nher was the fire extinguisher which was used to bash her face.<\/p>\n

“He ran back to inform the key keeper and his wife, who went to the
\nchurch to meet her lifeless, thinking she was dead. After careful
\nobservation, they noticed she moved her hand and quickly rushed her to
\nthe hospital.<\/p>\n

“It was at the hospital that Uwaila revealed she was reading all alone
\nwhen some unknown men came into the church, beat, raped and hit her head
\nwith a fire extinguisher. However, she later passed on.”<\/p>\n

The case was eventually reported to Oregbeni Police Station, but nothing
\nhas been done about it so far.<\/p>\n

Her friends and family have now taken to social media to demand action,
\nusing the hashtag #JusticeForUwa.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the Management of the\u00a0 institution, has decried the news of
\nthe rape and subsequent murder of one of its students, Miss Vera
\nOmozuwa.<\/p>\n

The victim was a 100 level Microbiology student of the institution
\nbefore her travail.<\/p>\n

Vice Chancellor of UNIBEN, Prof. Lilian Salami, in a statement through
\nthe institution\u2019s Public Relations Officer, Dr Benedicta Ehanire,
\ndescribed the news as shocking.<\/p>\n

In the statement made available to newsmen on Sunday in Benin, the VC
\nsaid the actions were condemnable and should not be condoned by any
\nsociety.<\/p>\n

She said the current COVID-19 pandemic was already hard on everyone and
\nthat compounding it with inflicting additional pain on any family was a
\nwicked act.<\/p>\n

While commiserating with the bereaved family on the loss of their
\ndaughter, Salami prayed God to grant her soul peaceful rest.<\/p>\n

The vice chancellor urged students of the institution and indeed all
\nyoung people to be wary of the company they kept and the places they
\nvisited.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, a delegation had been sent by the university\u2019s management to
\ncommiserate with the bereaved family.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
