These are obviously not the best times for Nigeria and Nigerians. The
\npervasive state of anomie doesn\u2019t give room for any form of joy or smile
\nas melancholy has gained a strong foothold nationwide. Nigeria
\nperpetually maintains perennial rankings in the bottom quartile of
\nglobal socio-economic and political developmental indices. Coming on the
\nheels of two key reports that labeled Nigeria as the poverty capital of
\nthe world and one of the most miserable places on earth, it would not be
\nout of place to say the country is on a tailspin. The twinge of
\nhopelessness is so palpable and conspicuous that it\u2019s legible to the
\nblind, audible to the deaf and its strong whiff is everywhere. The most
\ninexplicable thing that beats logic hollow is the open acknowledgment of
\nhelplessness, a preponderance of fatalism, seemingly overt resignation
\nto fate, and a tacit admission of defeat by both government and
\ncitizenry alike in the face of the myriad of quagmires of variegated
\nshades and sizes assailing the nation.The despair of our time includes the actual threat of war, the
\nincreasing polarization of wealth, rising incidence of kidnapping,
\nbanditry and armed robbery, ineffective electoral system, mounting youth
\nrestiveness and restlessness, the resurgence of Boko haram terrorists,
\nmarauding gangs of bandits and killer herdsmen, systemic failure of
\ngovernment at all tiers, emerging virulent strain of democracy,
\nworsening human development indices, failing educational systems and
\nstandards, growing lack of confidence in the judiciary, restructuring
\nand the escalating pace of insecurity nationwide.\u00a0 Others include
\ninadequate electricity supply, pipe-borne water, social \/health
\nservices, employment opportunities, road network, etc. Despite the
\nflaunting of socio-economic successes on all fronts by the present
\nadministration, a professor said the purported landmark achievements are
\ninvisible to the majority of Nigerians. Another discernible observer
\nlamented that poverty and despondency bestrides Nigeria\u2019s terrain like a
\nforeign invading and conquering army
\n.
\nQuite auspicious is the complete evisceration of the last vestiges of
\nsocial solidarity, expanded concept of kinship and brotherhood that once
\nembodied Nigeria\u2019s humaneness.\u00a0 The torrents of mindboggling and
\ngrotesquely depressing news and incidents all over the country give
\nimpetus to the growing perception that the nation has totally lost its
\nsoul. I may be challenged, but the truth is that a critical mass of
\nNigerians mostly youths have already written off Nigeria. Look at the
\nhigh proportion of people who are hell-bent on fleeing the country by
\neither road or ship. Also, check out the large number of people applying
\nfor visas at various embassies and departing MMIA on a daily basis. I
\nrecently came across an International Organization for Migration report
\nin 2017 which said that majority of the potential sex trafficking
\nvictims arriving in Italy by sea are Nigerian women.But is humane recovery ever possible on our benighted shores? are we
\ndesirous of change or even ready to change?\u00a0 What can be done to halt
\nNigeria\u2019s present descent to averni? What will pull Nigeria out of this
\ndisheartening nadir we have found ourselves?. Is there anything
\nmeaningful that the average Nigerian can do? Like in the game of
\nthrones, the odds are clearly stacked against us as a people and as a
\nnation.\u00a0 The proclivity to rescue Nigeria from the jaws of the
\nmythological Kraken is dampened by our collective docility in the face
\nof overwhelming difficulties at all phases, frightening psychological,
\nphysiological, and rights abuses and atrocious existence in very onerous
\nand heart-wrenching circumstances. What is happening is that Nigerians
\nare clearly detached from reality by living a lie, exuding a false
\nfeeling of sanity, and pretending that all is well in the face of overt
\ndysfunction and chaos. The truth is that Nigeria is suffering from a
\nterminal ailment and is on the verge of slipping into life support mode.<\/p>\n

The year 2020 represents an amazing opportunity and propitious time for
\nall of us to act fast to save Nigeria. Nigerians who love peace,
\nequality, and justice should comprehend the inevitability of embarking
\non a serious and comprehensive overhauling of our individual mindsets
\nand all our systems and to organize against pernicious politicians,
\ncivil\/public servants, corporate hawks, contractors and other people who
\nhave virtually held Nigeria by its jugular for decades. We should
\nrealize that only a united and organized mass of Nigerians across
\nethnic, religious, cultural and political divides can propel Nigeria to
\nits desired and deserved heights. Nigerians must come together and start
\nthinking of rising above primordial, ethnic, religious, mercantile, and
\nother sentiments in order to generate the required constructive social
\nchange that can turn this country around and create a fairer, more just,
\nlaw-abiding, open and more caring society.<\/p>\n
