\nRivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike has condemned police
\ninvolvement in partisan politics.<\/p>\n

Governor Wike was reacting to the recent action of the Ondo State
\nCommissioner of Police who was used to infringe on the fundamental human
\nright of the State’s Deputy Governor, Agboola Ajayi.<\/p>\n

In an interview with journalists in Port Harcourt, the governor said it
\nwas wrong for the Commissioner of Police, Ondo state to dabble into
\npolitics by confining or denying the Ondo State Deputy Governor access
\nto his residence based on the rumor of his defection to another
\npolitical party.<\/p>\n

He described the act as unfortunate and condemnable in a democratically
\nelected government.<\/p>\n

“The Nigeria Governors’ Forum should rise to the occasion and demand
\nthat those behind actions that bother on the infringement of
\nconstitutional rights be brought to book.<\/p>\n

“I will continue to say the truth,\u00a0 it does not matter which political
\nparty is erring. Look at the police reducing themselves to a level where
\npoliticians will now send them to infringe on the right of a deputy
\ngovernor without regard to the fact that he has immunity.<\/p>\n

“They removed a Commissioner of Police in Rivers state because of the
\nCalverton Helicopter saga which had to do with persons whose COVID-19
\nstatus were not known during the lockdown in the State.\u00a0 So, what should
\nhappen to the commissioner of police who stopped a democratically
\nelected deputy governor from entering his house simply because of the
\nrumour that he wanted to defect to another political party?<\/p>\n

“If that Commissioner of Police was in Rivers State,\u00a0 he would have been
\nremoved. This is part of the reasons people say I criticize the
\nGovernors Forum. It is not created for any political party, it should
\nspeak against constitutional infractions.<\/p>\n

“A deputy governor linked to the purported rumour of defection has the
\nright of freedom of association. What is the business of a commissioner
\nof police?<\/p>\n

“Nobody knows where we are headed in this country.\u00a0 It is unfortunate
\nthat we have different laws and rules for different people,” he said.<\/p>\n

The governor wondered why Femi Falana is not quick to condemn the role
\nplayed by the police in breaching the provisions of the Nigerian
\nconstitution in Ondo State, the same way he condemned actions taken by
\nthe Rivers State Government to save the lives of\u00a0 Rivers people from
\nCOVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n

“Human rights activists and people like Femi\u00a0 Falana are silent. Falana
\nwill not talk because the matter has to do with Ondo State governor who
\nis his friend.<\/p>\n

“There is no human rights issue in the Ondo State incident but when it
\nconcerns Rivers State, he will be quick to act on issues he doesn’t even
\nhave the facts.\u00a0 That is when you will see him come out and begin to
\nrecite constitutional provisions.<\/p>\n

“Today,\u00a0 I call on Femi Falana to speak out about the violation of the
\nfundamental human rights of the deputy governor of Ondo State.<\/p>\n

“People think that we can be deceived when they play ethnic politics
\nalways. People should not play this game as if Nigerians are fools.
\nWhen it suits them,\u00a0 they say one thing, when it does not suit them,
\nthey say another thing.\u00a0 Falana should come out and tell Nigerians his
\nview on this issue as the world human rights defender,” he added.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
