{"id":74382,"date":"2020-06-23T06:37:41","date_gmt":"2020-06-23T05:37:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/?p=74382"},"modified":"2020-06-23T06:37:41","modified_gmt":"2020-06-23T05:37:41","slug":"efcc-re-arrests-john-yusuf-for-n32-8bn-pension-fraud","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/exclusive\/efcc-re-arrests-john-yusuf-for-n32-8bn-pension-fraud\/","title":{"rendered":"EFCC Re-arrests\u00a0 John Yusuf For N32.8bn Pension Fraud."},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"m6750066878694767857\" class=\"mail-message \">\n<div class=\"mail-message-header spacer\">Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, have<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"m349705400195365142\" class=\"mail-message expanded\">\n<div class=\"mail-message-content collapsible zoom-normal mail-show-images \">\n<div class=\"clear\">re-arrested a former Assistant Director in the Federal Civil Service,<br \/>\nJohn Yakubu Yusuf,\u00a0 who has been on the run since 2018 after the Court<br \/>\nof Appeal, Abuja Division, sentenced him to six years imprisonment and a<br \/>\nfine of N22.9billion,\u00a0 for conniving with five other suspects to steal<br \/>\nN32.8billion Police Pension Fund.<\/p>\n<p>Based on his re-arrest, Justice Baba Yusuf of the FCT High Court on<br \/>\nMonday, June 22, 2020, issued a remand order that will enable him to<br \/>\nserve his six years jail term in Kuje Correctional Service,\u00a0 Abuja.<\/p>\n<p>Yusuf is one of the six federal civil servants facing prosecution for<br \/>\nallegedly stealing N32.8billion Police Pension Fund.\u00a0 He was initially<br \/>\nconvicted and sentenced to two years imprisonment with an option of fine<br \/>\nof N750, 000 (Seven Hundred Thousand Naira only)\u00a0 by a Federal Capital<br \/>\nTerritory High Court presided over by Justice Abubakar Talba, in a<br \/>\nplea-bargain arrangement.<\/p>\n<p>The conviction,\u00a0 considered to be a slap on the wrist,\u00a0 sparked national<br \/>\nand international outrage.<\/p>\n<p>The EFCC,\u00a0 dissatisfied with the judgment of the trial court,<br \/>\napproached the appellate court to set aside the judgment. Ruling on the<br \/>\nsubstantive matter, the Justices of the Court of Appeal held unanimously<br \/>\nthat the three counts involving\u00a0 Yusuf\u00a0 (Counts 17, 18, and 19) clearly<br \/>\nstated the amounts he converted for his personal use. He pleaded guilty<br \/>\nto the three counts and thereby admitted to the conversion of an<br \/>\naggregate sum of about N24billion to his personal use.<\/p>\n<p>The court stressed that the sentence of the trial court did not serve as<br \/>\ndeterrence to both the convict and others.
