President Muhammadu Buhari Thursday in Abuja advised members of the
\ngoverning party, All Progressives Congress (APC), to withdraw all
\npending litigations against one another, and settle for internal
\nconciliation, warning that the mutating disagreements could lead to
\nself-destruction, with dire consequences.<\/p>\n
President Buhari, in his remarks at the emergency meeting of the
\nNational Executive Committee of the APC, held on a virtual platform,
\nsaid the gains of the party could be reversed as conflicts overshadow
\nthe primary objective of service to the people, urging members to
\nrefocus on the larger picture and place more emphasis on uniting the
\nparty.<\/p>\n
“Fellow party members, this is a very crucial moment in the life of our
\nparty and it is with a deep sense of concern that I stand before you
\ntoday to speak as the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria who
\nhas been elected on the platform of our great party – the All
\nProgressives Congress.<\/p>\n
“The issues currently confronting our party at this time are such that
\nwe should worry every party member. At the moment, our great party is
\nfaced with internal wrangling; there are on-going litigations amongst
\nsome party members and we cannot clearly ascertain the status of certain
\nNational Working Committee (NWC) members.”<\/p>\n
The President expressed worry over the shifting loyalty within the party
\nand inconsistency in leadership, which had opened the governing party to
\nmockery.<\/p>\n
“There are also other associated disputes as to the legitimacy or
\notherwise of holders of certain National Offices of the Party.\u00a0 The
\nParty is also contending with Judicial claims and counter-claims, Orders
\nand Counter-Orders, and indeed\u00a0 \u00a0Judgments and\u00a0 \u00a0Counter-Judgments that
\nare predominantly at cross-purposes.<\/p>\n
“Confronted with these issues, it is obvious that the fortunes of the
\nparty are currently in jeopardy,\u00a0 \u00a0administration of our party is
\nbecoming impossible and there is consequently an urgent need for
\nintervention to immediately arrest further drifts and internal wrangling
\nwhich may lead to total disintegration.<\/p>\n
“What we see clearly emerging,\u00a0 \u00a0is that we are beginning to
\nself-destruct.\u00a0 \u00a0This, my dear party members, is not just regrettable
\nbut utterly gut-wrenching.”
\nPresident Buhari proposed that:<\/p>\n
“The meeting may adopt the developed resolution as contained in the
\nagenda and pass resolutions including approving\u00a0 the\u00a0 \u00a0immediate
\ndiscontinuation\u00a0 \u00a0of\u00a0 \u00a0all\u00a0 \u00a0pending litigations involving the party and
\nits members; ratifying the primary election conducted in Edo State;
\ndissolving the current National Working Committee, and appointing
\ncaretaker\/Extra-ordinary\u00a0 \u00a0Convention Planning committee for the
\nparty.”<\/p>\n
The President also reiterated the need to discontinue all litigations
\ninvolving members of the party, which were connected to issues of the
\nparty, adding: “The directive had been issued before, unfortunately,
\nsome members failed to heed the directive. Thus, at this time, it must
\nbe made a Resolution\u00a0 \u00a0of\u00a0 \u00a0the\u00a0 \u00a0Party\u00a0 \u00a0which\u00a0 \u00a0must\u00a0 \u00a0be
\neffectively\u00a0 \u00a0enforced\u00a0 \u00a0with\u00a0 \u00a0dire consequences for members who choose
\nto ignore the directive.”<\/p>\n
The President said in order to return to the “winning ways”, the APC
\nmust maintain cohesion by closing its ranks.
\n“We must be alive to the time and the task that is before us. As we all
\nknow, we are immediately confronted with the upcoming gubernatorial
\nelections in Edo and Ondo States. Therefore, this is the time to get our
\nacts together.”
\nThe emergency NEC meeting adopted all the recommendations by President
\nBuhari, and appointed the Governor of Yobe State, Mallam Mai Buni, as
\nCaretaker National Chairman, while Senator John Akpanudoede was
\ndesignated Caretaker National Secretary.<\/p>\n
