\nCommission(NDDC), Dr. Joy Nunieh from an attempted abduction.<\/p>\n

The governor called on the Inspector General of Police to investigate
\nthe circumstances that led to over 50 armed policemen storming the Port
\nHarcourt residence of Dr. Nunieh at 4 a.m on Thursday, July 16, 2020.<\/p>\n

Governor Wike said he was on ground to frustrate the attempted
\nabduction, and berated the \u2018self-styled\u2019 armed policemen who claimed to
\nbe members of the Inspector General Monitoring Unit.<\/p>\n

The governor said under a civilized society, the proper thing to do is
\nto invite her to answer any allegation. Adding that to storm her
\nresidence at such an unholy hour, the governor said, suggests some
\nsinister motive that should not be tolerated.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat has happened today is a disgrace. Who knows what would have
\nhappened to her if they had gained access to her main room. I went there
\npersonally to see things for myself and rescued her.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe is supposed to testify before the House of Representatives
\nCommittee and here we are having armed men wanting to abduct her.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe came out to protect our daughter and we will do so to every Rivers
\ncitizen. That is the oath of office I swore to. It doesn\u2019t matter the
\npolitical affiliation. We will not allow anybody to destroy Rivers
\nstate.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is so unfortunate and I cry for this country concerning the ways
\nthings are going. They didn\u2019t have a warrant of arrest, but would storm
\nsomebody\u2019s house? In fact, the State Commissioner of Police is not
\naware.<\/p>\n

\u201d So, tell me how something will happen in a state and the Commissioner
\nof Police is not aware. They said its the Inspector General Monitoring
\nUnit. So, we have such a Unit taking over the responsibility of
\ncrime-fighting in a state and the Commissioner of Police is not aware. I
\ncan also assume too that the Inspector General of Police is not aware.
\nHe should investigate it, \u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The governor also called on governors of states that make up the NDDC to
\nensure that their citizens do not have a hand in the planned abduction
\nof the former Managing Director of NDDC.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf there is any allegation of crime against her, I will not back her,
\nbut you can\u2019t kill her for no established crime. I don\u2019t know who\u2019s
\nresponsible, but whoever is behind it should not take Rivers state for
\ngranted because we will fight back.<\/p>\n

\u201cFrom what has happened now, I want to say that Rivers State is fully
\nout. Anybody who is responsible for this attempted abduction of our
\ndaughter should know that enough is enough.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey can\u2019t treat her like a common criminal. I am sure that President
\nMuhammadu Buhari is not aware of this.<\/p>\n

\u201cAll the Niger Delta States should find out if any of their citizens
\nhave a hand in the unfortunate incident and call on such people to leave
\nour daughter alone. She is no longer the Managing Director of NDDC.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe way things are going now, it seems people want to destroy Rivers
\nState and it is unacceptable.<\/p>\n

\u201cUsing the police to carry out the abduction of citizens should not be
\nencouraged. A similar incident had happened in this state before when
\nthey wanted to use the same style to abduct a serving Judge.<\/p>\n

Dr. Joi Nunieh who thanked Governor Wike for coming to her rescue said
\nthe armed policemen came about 4am, broke into her premises but were
\nstopped by the security door leading to her main room.<\/p>\n

\u201cThose who told me the Commissioner of Police was downstairs, lied
\nbecause it was his deputy that actually came. I opened the door, and
\nthey wanted to grab me, I now pushed back the door and locked it and
\nwent upstairs.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo, my Governor came, asked them for the warrant of arrest, and why
\nthey did not invite me to the police station instead of attempting to
\nabduct a woman like a criminal.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe governor took me away in his car and I am taking refuge in
\nGovernment House. I want to thank His Excellency for keeping to his word
\nthat nothing should happen to the daughter of Rivers State.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was supposed to be going to Abuja today to make my submission before
\nthe Committee of the House of Representatives. I am sure the motive was
\nto stop me,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
