The Coalition of United Political Parties, CUPP, has expressed sadness
\nover the military coup in Mali which saw the resignation of the
\ncountry’s President, Ibrahim Keita.<\/p>\n
While welcoming Keita’s resignation which it described as though
\n“belated”, CUPP in a statement signed by its Spokesman Ikenga
\nUgochinyere, urged Malians to be vigilant until democracy is restored in
\nthe country.<\/p>\n
The Statement reads:<\/p>\n
“Nigeria Opposition Coalition CUPP is saddened by the Military
\nCoup\/People’s Revolt in Mali but CUPP welcomes the belated resignation
\nof the disgraced Malian President Keita and dissolution of the
\nParliament in the early hours of today. It is unfortunate that Mr. Keita
\nwas willing to drag his country into anarchy just because he wanted to
\ncling to power despite being unpopular with his citizens.<\/p>\n
“We urge the Malian People to remain vigilant until democracy is
\nrestored with the conduct of early elections and the immediate release
\nof kidnapped Opposition leader who has been in captivity for about five
\nmonths now.<\/p>\n
“As we wait for the official statement from our brothers in the
\nopposition in Mali, we align our position with the West African
\nOpposition Spokespersons who in our early morning emergency zoom meeting
\nthat ended hours ago have welcomed the belated resignation of the
\ndisgraced president and have advised other leaders in Africa not to
\ncontinue to take their people for granted and continue to abuse their
\noffice and fail in their duties like Mali President did.<\/p>\n
“We hope the leaders of the new regime in Mali will enact a transition
\nprocess that will lead to an early election and also work hard to
\nrelease the Opposition leader who has been kidnapped by jihadist group
\nbefore Mali stability can be fully restored.<\/p>\n
“We urge the M5-RFP opposition along with the June 5 Movement (named
\nafter the date of its first protest) to ensure that the Opposition
\nfamily remains one in Mali until democracy is fully restored, the dying
\neconomy revived and the growing power of the terrorist groups and armed
\nkiller groups that have taken over large areas of the Country are
\ndestroyed.<\/p>\n
“CUPP will continue to monitor the situation in Mali and shall continue
\nto stand with the People of Mali.”<\/p>\n
