The management of the Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, has<\/div>\n
\n
pledged to verify and pay all outstanding foreign scholarship claims
\nwithin the next few weeks.<\/p>\n

Dr. Cairo Ojougboh, the Executive Director, Projects, of the Commission,
\nmade the pledge in London at a meeting on Monday with representatives of
\nthe Commission’s scholars in the United Kingdom.<\/p>\n

Dr. Ojougboh said the Commission decided to verify the scholarship
\nawards because of obvious discrepancies and the fact that 50 of those
\nawarded the scholarships in 2019 did not leave Nigeria for their studies
\nin the UK.<\/p>\n

The verification exercise will involve the registration of all scholars
\non a new portal, custom-built for the Commission, and the confirmation
\nof the claims with the universities of study.<\/p>\n

The Executive Director said the delays in payment of the scholarships
\nwere caused by many factors including the fight by those opposed to Mr.
\nPresident’s forensic audit of the Commission which distracted the
\nmanagement from working for at least two months.<\/p>\n

The sudden death in May of the then Executive Director, Finance and
\nAdministration, the late Chief Ibanga Etang, also delayed payments as
\nthe Commission needed to wait for a replacement to be able to access its
\nfunds in its domiciliary account at the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN.<\/p>\n

The scholars had appealed to the Commission to pay those who were left
\nout in the last payment exercise, a few months ago.<\/p>\n

The NDDC team also included Mrs. Idara Akpabio and Mr. Godson Ideozu,
\nmanaging director of Marg Education International Limited, the
\nCommission’s consultants.<\/p>\n

The scholars were represented by Gobo Iyowuna, Kingsley Omokaro, and
\nKayode Olugbemi.<\/p>\n

The meeting held at the UK office of Clearpoint Communications Limited,
\nthe Commission’s international media management consultants.<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
