The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) says it has arrested 367,135
\ntraffic offenders nationwide from January to August this year.<\/p>\n
The Corps Public Education Officer, ACM. Bisi Kazeem, who made the
\ndisclosure in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on
\nThursday in Abuja, said the offenders violated different traffic rules
\nand regulations.<\/p>\n
Kazeem said that majority of the offenders were arrested for
\nover-loading, seatbelt use violation, riding motorcycle without helmet,
\nspeed limit violation, light sign violation, driving without or with a
\nshattered windscreen, driver\u2019s licence violations, among others.<\/p>\n
He said that the highest number of arrests were recorded in August,
\nwhile the least number of arrests was recorded in April, due to
\nrestrictions placed on inter-state travels.<\/p>\n
\u201cMore measures have been put in place to ensure that motorists and road
\nusers comply with traffic rules and regulations.<\/p>\n
\u201cApart from conventional patrol activities mounted by regular
\noperatives, the corps has special squads like the Cobra Unit and the
\nCorridor Commands, who do not only apprehend offenders.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis unit also subjects them to emotional evaluation test at government
\nhealth facilities before they are released.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis has gone a long way in trickling down offences and crashes
\noccasioned by those critical offences. We also deploy the
\ninstrumentalities of the judiciary, through conducting mobile court
\noperations.<\/p>\n
\u201cOther special patrol operations like Operation Scorpion, targeted at
\narticulated vehicles that are presently going on in Lagos and Ogun
\nStates and other interventionist operations are part of the strategic
\napproaches to arrest offenders.<\/p>\n
\u201cMeanwhile, it is good to let you know that adequate public
\nenlightenment campaigns are regularly carried out to acquaint road users
\nwith best road practices,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
In another development, Kazeem said that the Corps Marshal, Dr Boboye
\nOyeyemi, had directed deployment of personnel and logistics nationwide
\nacross celebration venues of the independence anniversary.<\/p>\n
He said that the nation would witness massive presence of FRSC
\noperatives at areas having critical needs.<\/p>\n
\u201cFor instance, in the FCT alone, the corps will deploy a total of 150
\nofficers and men, 20 patrol vehicles, 10 bikes, two ambulances and two
\ntow trucks to ensure ease of traffic.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is put in place to ensure prompt removal of obstructions and
\nrescue services in the event of a crash. The corps will also cover about
\n16 strategic points and the main gate.\u201d<\/p>\n
Kazeem, however, advised commercial road users to avoid over-speeding
\nand dangerous driving, explaining that reckless driving was the major
\ncause of fatalities on highways and within the capital city.<\/p>\n
He called on passengers not to allow drivers to overload their vehicles
\nor engage in excessive speeding for their own safety.<\/p>\n
He also appealed to both drivers and passengers to comply with the
\npost-COVID-19 safety guidelines, warning that the corps would continue
\nits operations against violators.<\/p>\n
\u201cBefore setting out with your vehicle, ensure your vehicle is in good
\ncondition as part of support in promoting safer roads across the
