The Inspector-General of Police (I-G), Mr. Mohammed Adamu has banned the<\/div>\n
\n
personnel of the Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad (FSARS) and other
\nTactical Squads of the police from routine patrols across the country.The Force Public Relations Officer (FPRO), Mr. Frank Mba disclosed this
\nin a statement on Sunday in Abuja.<\/p>\n

Adamu said the squads affected by the ban are the Special Tactical Squad
\n(STS), Intelligence Response Team (IRT), Anti-Cultism Squad, and other
\nTactical Squads operating at the Federal, Zonal, and Command levels.<\/p>\n

He said the affected squads were by the directive, banned from carrying
\nout routine patrols and other conventional low-risk duties, stop and
\nsearch, checkpoints, mounting of roadblocks and traffic checks, with
\nimmediate effect.
\n\u201cIn addition, no personnel of the Force is authorised to embark on
\npatrols or tactical assignments in mufti.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey must always appear in their police uniforms or approved tactical
\ngear,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Adamu said the directives came against the backdrop of findings by the
\nleadership of the Force that a few personnel of the Tactical Squads hide
\nunder these guises to perpetrate all forms of illegality.<\/p>\n

According to him, the I-G has warned the Tactical Squads against the
\ninvasion of the privacy of citizens particularly through the
\nindiscriminate and unauthorised search of mobile phones, laptops, and
\nother smart devices.<\/p>\n

He said the personnel was to concentrate and respond only to cases of
\narmed robbery, kidnapping, and other violent crimes when the need
\narises.<\/p>\n

The I-G said the FSARS and other Police Tactical Squads remain a
\ncritical component of the Force in confronting prevailing and emerging
\nviolent crimes in the country.<\/p>\n

He, however, condemned every act of unprofessionalism, abuse of human
\nrights, and high handedness by some personnel of the Squads.<\/p>\n

The I-G, therefore, ordered the X-Squad and the Monitoring Unit to
\nembark on immediate and massive nationwide monitoring of activities of
\nTactical Squads and other police officers on the road.<\/p>\n

He urged the monitoring unit to ensure prompt arrest, investigation, and
\nprosecution of all erring police officers who would violate these
\ndirectives and other extant regulations of the Force.<\/p>\n

Adamu said the Commissioners of Police in charge of FSARS, State
\nCommands and their supervisory Zonal Assistant Inspectors General of
\nPolice, would be held liable for any misconduct within their Area of
\nResponsibility (AOR).<\/p>\n

The I-G, therefore, urged them to ensure effective supervision and
\nmentoring of the personnel of the Tactical Squads under their
\njurisdiction.<\/p>\n

Adamu said two operatives of the FSARS and their civilian accomplice
\noperating in Lagos State were arrested by the Lagos State Police
\nCommand, for acts of professional misconduct including extortion and
\nintimidation of innocent citizens.
\nHe said the operational vehicle of the men had also been impounded
\nadding that, the disciplinary procedure had already commenced against
\nthe defaulters.<\/p>\n

The I-G pledged to bequeath to Nigerians, a reformed Police Force that
\nwould be accountable, responsible, and ever ready to defend and uphold
\nthe rights of citizens in the course of their duties.<\/p>\n

He enjoined citizens not to allow the misconduct by a few personnel of
\nthe Force to negatively impact their belief, confidence, and trust in
