Labour unions in the oil and gas sector have directed their members in<\/div>\n

Chevron Nigeria Limited to commence a total shut down of the company\u2019s
\noperations following the sack of 600 Nigerian employees and other
\nanti-Labour practices by the management of the company.<\/p>\n

The Unions, National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas (NUPENG), and
\nthe Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria
\n(PENGASSAN) gave the directive in a joint statement on Sunday.<\/p>\n

NUPENG\u2019S President, Mr. Williams Akporeha, and the President, PENGASSAN,
\nMr. Festus Osifo, said: \u201cWe have directed our members in Chevron to
\nwithdraw their services.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe also call on the Federal Government to call Chevron Management to
\norder, otherwise we can no longer guarantee industrial peace in the oil
\nand gas sector.<\/p>\n

\u201cHere is our fatherland and we have a labour law that regulates the
\nactivities of organisations in Nigeria; this law cannot be breached; We
\nmust follow the process.\u201d<\/p>\n

The duo alleged that Chevron management on Independence Day notified
\nabout 2,000 of its employees that their services were no longer
\nrequired.<\/p>\n

Both leaders also alleged that Chevron management had asked those
\nemployees who were still interested in working with them to apply
\nafresh.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis development runs contrary to Nigeria\u2019s laws regulating the Oil and
\nGas industry as it does not protect our national interest.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is an imperialist agenda that must not be allowed to stay; most
\nespecially as we have just finished celebrating our 60th independence as
\na sovereign country,\u201d the duo said.<\/p>\n

Earlier in a statement, Chevron\u2019s General Manager Policy, Government and
\nPublic Affairs, Esimaje Brikinn, said the welfare and safety of its
\nworkforce was one of its highest priorities.<\/p>\n

Brikinn said: \u201cMaking changes to the organisation is never easy for
\nanyone that will be impacted, but it is to improve our ability to remain
\ncompetitive in Nigeria.<\/p>\n

\u201cReducing the cost and improving the efficiency of our operations are
\ncritical to generating more revenues for the Federal Government of
\nNigeria,\u201d he said.<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
