President Muhammadu Buhari has approved a special salary scale for
\nNigerian teachers while also increasing the years of service from 35
\nyears to 40 years.<\/p>\n
Buhari, who was represented by the Minister of Education, Malam Adamu
\nAdamu made this known in Abuja during the occasion of the 2020 World
\nTeacher\u2019s Day.<\/p>\n
The theme of celebration \u201d Teachers: Leading in Crisis Reimagining the
\nFuture\u201d captures the resilience of teachers and school administrators
\nglobally amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n
Buhari instructed the ministry to facilitate the implementation of the
\nnew teachers’ salary scheme saying this will encourage the teachers in
\ndelivering better service.<\/p>\n
According to him, teachers have the power to shape and reshape the lives
\nof young people and help learners to enhance their potentials.<\/p>\n
\u201d Only great teachers can produce excellent people and students that
\nwill make the future of our country great.<\/p>\n
\u201dA positive or negative influence of a teacher on any child will have an
\neffect on that child. Therefore the federal government is ensuring
\nquality education to access<\/p>\n
\u201d My administration has resolved that quality education of teachers in
\nterms of engagement of continued professional development has to be
\ngiven priority.<\/p>\n
\u201d The future of this country will be a function of quality education
\ndelivered to our children today and this depends on the quality of our
\nteachers and the quality of our teachers depend on the motivation and
\ntheir motivation depends on how happy they are doing what they are
\ndoing.<\/p>\n
\u201d To address these challenges, my administration has approved the
\nfollowing for teachers and the teaching profession. That in order to
\nattract investment in the teaching profession, the quality of the
\nintroduction of a bursary award has been restored.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere will be a special pension scheme to enable the teaching
\nprofession to retain its experienced talent as well as extend teachers
\nretirement age to 65 years and the duration of teachers years to 40
\nyears.<\/p>\n
\u201d And that is to create a career path policy for the teaching profession
\nin Nigeria and gives speedy teachers to programme and ICT training.<\/p>\n
He added that his administration had also approved the building of
\nlow-cost housing for teachers in rural areas, the sponsorship of
\nteachers, prompt payment of salary and timely promotion of teachers to
\neliminate stagnation.<\/p>\n
He said this would motivate and restore the lost glory of teachers and
\nteaching in the country.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, the Minister of State for Education, Mr Chukuemeka Nwajuiba
\nidentified the teaching profession as the greatest profession in the
\nworld which must be accorded adequate recognition and respect.<\/p>\n
Nwajuiba noted that the picture of a Nigerian teacher in the 1960s and
\n1970s which connotes discipline needed to be replicated in today\u2019s
\nprofession.<\/p>\n
According to him, having a day to celebrate the teacher is just but a
\ntoken gesture of recognition to the sacrificial contribution of
\nteachers.<\/p>\n
\u201d In those days, very comfortable and important figures in the society
\nwould send their children to a teacher\u2019s house for grooming. That was
\nthe teacher then.<\/p>\n
\u201d Teacher\u2019s children and those that lived with them became the cr\u00e8me de
\nla cr\u00e8me of the society. The society sadly has tilted towards ephemeral
\nappearances that negates the standard of teachers as role models.<\/p>\n
\u201d We think this should stop. Teachers deserve recognition and respect.
\nThe first step is to have qualified teachers in practice.<\/p>\n
\u201d That is why the ministry through the Teachers Registration Council is
\nmaking concerted efforts to withdraw unqualified teachers from the
\nclassroom nationwide,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
The minister however urged individuals, states, and local government
\neducation authorities and corporate organisations to replicate the
\nreward system in order to institutionalise productivity in the education
\nsector.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Mr. Sonny Echono, Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of
\nEducation commended the enduring selfless devotion of all teachers
\nacross the federation especially those in crisis thorn and remote areas
\nfor their invaluable contribution to the development of education.<\/p>\n
\u201d I also wish to appreciate UNESCO for its recommendation to all nations
\nto dedicate the 5th of October of every year as the special day to
\nremember the signing of the standard-setting instrument on the status of
\nteachers and also extol their virtues.<\/p>\n
\u201d To the individual, who has enjoyed the privilege of being taught by a
\nteacher, I urge you to always remember to appreciate that special
\nteacher who laid the foundation for the success you have achieved in
\nlife.\u201d<\/p>\n
