President Donald Trump will head back to the White House on Monday to
\ncontinue his coronavirus treatment there, despite mysteries surrounding
\nhis health and the president\u2018s doctor warning that he may not be \u201cout of
\nthe woods yet.\u201c<\/p>\n
\u201cI will be leaving the great Walter Reed Medical Center today at 6:30
\nP.M. Feeling really good!\u201d he wrote in a tweet.<\/p>\n
“Don\u2019t be afraid of Covid,” Trump added of the virus that has infected
\nmore than 7.4 million Americans and killed nearly 210,000. “Don\u2019t let it
\ndominate your life. We have developed, under the Trump Administration,
\nsome really great drugs & knowledge. I feel better than I did 20 years
\nago!\u201d<\/p>\n
Trump\u2019s discharge comes as the White House faces accusations of a lack
\nof transparency about the severity of the president\u2019s illness, and as
\nthe president has sought to project some semblance of normalcy despite
\ncontracting the virus.<\/p>\n
It was a striking statement, even for a president who has repeatedly
\nplayed down the threat of the virus throughout the pandemic and worked
\nto project normalcy and portray himself as undaunted by it throughout
\nhis stay in the hospital.<\/p>\n
His administration, meanwhile, has been accused of failing to be
\ntransparent about the severity of Trump\u2018s illness and panned for its
\nresponse to the pandemic more generally.<\/p>\n
Trump was first transferred to Walter Reed on Friday evening out of what
\nthe White House said was an \u201cabundance of caution.\u201d His aides have since
\nbeen eager to show that Trump is still carrying out the duties of the
\noffice despite his hospitalization.<\/p>\n
But Sean Conley, the president\u2019s physician, appeared to confirm Sunday
\nthat Trump\u2019s condition is more serious than the White House had so far
\nacknowledged.<\/p>\n
And in a news briefing on Monday afternoon, Conley conceded that the
\npresident \u201cmay not be entirely out of the woods yet.\u201d<\/p>\n
But, he continued, \u201cthe team and I agree that all our evaluations \u2014 and
\nmost importantly his clinical status \u2014 support the resident\u2019s safe
\nreturn home, where he\u2019ll be supported by world-class medical care 24\/7.<\/p>\n
Trump’s discharge comes at a potentially delicate time, as questions
\npersist about his health.<\/p>\n
Some patients see sharp declines about seven to 10 days after infection,
\nand the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that
\nCovid-positive patients continue to self-isolate for 10 days after
\nsymptoms begin to emerge. Trump, whose age and weight increase his risk
\nof severe disease, announced his diagnosis early Friday \u2014 four days ago.<\/p>\n
The drugs Trump is receiving, and some of the details revealed by
\nTrump’s medical team, suggest that the president has a moderate to
\nsevere case of Covid-19.<\/p>\n
Trump has received two experimental drugs, care that many of the
\nmillions of Americans infected with the virus likely would not have had
\naccess to, as well as one steroid generally reserved for patients with
\nsevere or critical coronavirus cases.<\/p>\n
Conley acknowledged on Monday that Trump was still at risk, telling
\nreporters that the president\u2019s medical team remained “cautiously
\noptimistic and on guard,\u201d in part because Trump was receiving a unique
\nlevel of care. \u201cWe\u2018re in a bit of uncharted territory when it comes to a
\npatient who received the therapies he has so early in the course,\u201c he
\nexplained.<\/p>\n
A day earlier, the president\u2019s medical team also revealed that Trump had
\nreceived oxygen therapy twice for limited periods, and that his blood
\noxygen levels had dipped below 94 percent \u2014 a worrisome threshold for
\npatients indicating a moderate or severe case of Covid-19.<\/p>\n
On Monday, the physicians said that Trump\u2018s blood oxygen level had risen
\nto 97 percent, and that the president was not having respiratory issues.
\nHe is also no longer running a fever, they said.<\/p>\n
