The Nigerian Opposition Coalition CUPP has rejected the ban on protests<\/div>\n
\n
announced by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Mohammed
\nBello, describing it as primitive, provocative, and barbaric.<\/p>\n

CUPP in a statement signed by Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere said “illegally
\nbanning legitimate and peaceful protest by Nigerians expressing their
\nright to air their views and anger over brutal actions of an incompetent
\nand brutal regime being visited on the people with the support of the
\nregimes brutal security forces,” is illegal.<\/p>\n

“It must be stated that instead of addressing the genuine issues of the
\nprotesters, agents of the Federal Government, its agencies, allies, and
\nsupporters have resorted to hiring armed thugs to attack the peaceful
\nprotesters. This act is not only provocative and barbaric, but it is
\nalso illegal, autocratic, primitive, and capable of igniting more
\nconfusion and clear signs government is not ready to end brutality
\nagainst citizens.<\/p>\n

“The opposition hereby warns the ruling APC, their armed groups and
\nsecurity forces to respect the constitutional rights of the patriotic
\nyoung Nigerians to protest and not hide under the cover of Covid-19
\nregulations which government officials have not obeyed themselves as a
\nreason to ban protests.<\/p>\n

“That statement from the Nigerian Army threatening peaceful Nigerians is
\na joke taken too far. The protests are wholly a civil action and do not
\nin any way concern the Army. Or is a day like this why the President has
\nrefused to sack the Service Chiefs? Nigerians are in shock and the
\nentire world is amazed that we could degenerate so quickly to such a
\npre-civilization era.<\/p>\n

“CUPP urges the Federal Government to focus on ending brutality of
\nsecurity forces and insecurity worsened by a corruption ridden
\nadministration.\u00a0 Good students of history will tell this government that
\nsuch violent suppression that it plans against innocent peaceful
\ncitizens has never worked and will not work. It will only backfire.<\/p>\n

“Handlers of the President are hereby advised to continue telling the
\nPresident until he hears that addressing the issues is the only way out
\nand not this plot to deploy primitive force and avoidable loss of
\nlives.”<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
