The Federal Government on Monday admonished political, religious,<\/div>\n
\n
traditional and opinion leaders to stop instigating youths for EndSARS
\nprotests so as to avert anarchy.<\/p>\n

\u201cLeaders should stop instigating the protests because that could lead to
\nanarchy,\u201d information and culture minister Lai Mohammed said in a
\nspecial NAN Forum on Monday in Abuja.<\/p>\n

The minister, who spoke specifically on the EndSARS protest and the way
\nforward, said he was disappointed that some leaders were encouraging
\nyouths to remain on the streets even after government had met their
\ndemands.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe protests are turning violent, unfortunately, many of our leaders
\nare falling short of expectation.<\/p>\n

\u201cRather than advise these youths, they have been instigating them and
\nthis is very disappointing.<\/p>\n

\u201cAll leaders, opinion, religious, political, including traditional
\nrulers, should be very careful in their interventions.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey have the right to intervene and a lot of them have huge
\nfollowership, but they should not incite; they should proffer solution
\nnot to complicate the matter on the ground.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey should emphasise that the protest is genuine and that the
\ngovernment has listened. They should let the youths know that everything
\nthe government has promised will be fulfilled,\u2019\u2019 he said<\/p>\n

Mohammed said that the original conveners of #EndSARS had lost control
\nof it, while hoodlums and people with an ulterior motive to destabilise
\nthe country had taken over the protest.<\/p>\n

He declared that encouraging protests that could lead to anarchy was a
\ndisservice to the nation.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are talking of the very existence of the country because some people
\nare using the genuine protest to seek an end to democracy and
\nrepresentative government.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are talking of a protest that has descended into an orgy of
\nviolence, looting, killing, and attempted assassination of a state
\ngovernor.<\/p>\n

\u201cA protest that led to hoodlums taking over the whole city of Benin,
\nreleasing inmates and setting Police stations ablaze.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is not what any leader should support or instigate the youths to
\ncontinue with,\u2019\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n

Mohammed noted that all the demands by the protesters had been met by
\nthe government, adding that some states had started implementing the
\ndirective by the National Economic Council.<\/p>\n

He specifically noted that some of the states had set up judicial panels
\nof inquiry to look into allegations of Police brutality and
\nextrajudicial killings.<\/p>\n

He said that the states had also set up a special victims’ support funds
\nto compensate victims of Police brutality and abuse, in addition to
\nspecial security and a human right committee on Police reform.<\/p>\n

The minister explained that the government decided to decentralise the
\ndialogue, reform, and compensation because the governors were in the
\nbest position to engage leaders of the group in their respective states.<\/p>\n

He appealed to the leadership of EndSARS to put forward their demands
\nand approach the governors who are already waiting for them. (NAN)<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
