Conference of Nigeria Political Parties (CNPP) has warned that there
\nwill be catastrophic consequences if the Police and Nigerian military
\nallow themselves to be pushed into using force to suppress the ongoing
\n#EndSARS protesters.<\/p>\n
The CNPP in a statement signed by its Secretary-General, Chief Willy
\nEzugwu warned that “Nigeria will burn if the police and military
\nauthorities allow themselves to be used by selfish government officials
\nwho have demonstrated an unprecedented level of insensitivity and
\nshielded president Muhammadu Buhari from knowing the reality of things.”<\/p>\n
According to the umbrella body of all registered political parties and
\npolitical associations in the country, “the situation is worsening
\nbecause our President has locked up himself in the Presidential Villa
\nwhile those who elected him are on the streets protesting against bad
\ngovernance and policy reform.”<\/p>\n
Recalling that “during the build-up to the planned labour unions strike
\nand after the eventual disappointment by the labour unions, the CNPP
\ncontinued to reach out to civil society groups across the country on the
\nneed to arrest the continued maladministration in the country.<\/p>\n
“But at the peak of the consultations and mobilisation, the SARS attack
\nthat sparked the rise of the #EndSARS Movement occurred.<\/p>\n
“Today, the federal government, through its intelligence networks,
\nshould have known that young people across the country, on their own
\naccord, opted to take their own destiny in their own hands after obvious
\nsellout and betrayal by labour unions in the country.<\/p>\n
“As the labour unions lost the trust of citizens, the youths are raising
\ntheir funds to support each other while the protests last, with some
\nNigerian celebrities supporting them with food and water.<\/p>\n
“At the momentum of the widespread protests, any attempt to use force to
\ndisperse these demonstrators will be disastrous for the country and may
\nlead to a total collapse of the already collapsing Nigerian economy.<\/p>\n
“We, therefore, warn the Nigerian military and the Police authorities
\nnot to allow selfish politicians to use them to destroy the country.<\/p>\n
“Unfortunately, the presidency and the ruling All Progressives Congress
\n(APC) did not, as expected, heed earlier advice by CNPP that there was
\nan urgent need for President Muhammadu Buhari to address the nation to
\ncalm ruffled nerves of the protesting youths.<\/p>\n
“As usual, the presidency saw such advice as an attack from the
\nopposition, even though it was based on intelligence within the CNPP
\nnetwork of impending total shutdown of the country, which fatherly words
\nof assurances from Mr President would have prevented.<\/p>\n
“We saw it coming and today, we are all living witnesses to the growing
\nagitations against bad governance both at home and abroad.<\/p>\n
“The APC and the Presidency should know that the worst is yet to come.
\nIt’s not the time to be adamant and insensitive. #EndSARS is a movement
\nof the people which no Pharaoh can stop.<\/p>\n
“No government is above the people; the people give power to those in
\ngovernment and all government officials at all levels, including
\nsecurity operatives, must immediately realise that the Nigerian people
\nare their employers and treat them as such.<\/p>\n
“Nobody can tell his or her employer to go to hell without dire
\nconsequences. For the umpteenth time Mr President, it’s time to address
\nNigerians.\u00a0 A word is enough for the wise”, the CNPP stated.<\/p>\n
