\nIt is unfortunate that the initial genuine and well-intended protest of
\nyouths in parts of the country against the Special Anti-Robbery Squad
\n(SARS) was hijacked and misdirected, President Muhammadu Buhari told
\nformer Heads of State and Presidents of Nigeria, Friday in Abuja.<\/p>\n

In a virtual meeting with the former leaders, President Buhari
\nreiterated that the Government will not fold its arms and allow
\nmiscreants and criminals to continue to perpetrate acts of hooliganism
\nin the country.<\/p>\n

At the meeting were all living past leaders, including Gen. Yakubu
\nGowon, President Olusegun Obasanjo, Gen. Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida,
\nChief Ernest Shonekan, Gen. Abulsalami Abubakar, and former President
\nGoodluck Jonathan.<\/p>\n

The President recounted the initial concessions made by his
\nadministration on the demands of youths protesting against the excesses
\nof some members of the SARS.<\/p>\n

He recalled that the youths had demanded that the squad be disbanded,
\nand further articulated the additional demands, including:<\/p>\n

\u201dThe immediate release of all arrested protesters.<\/p>\n

\u201dJustice for deceased victims of police brutality and appropriate
\ncompensation for their families.<\/p>\n

\u201dSetting up an independent body to oversee the investigation and
\nprosecution of all reports of Police misconduct within 10 days.<\/p>\n

\u201dPsychological evaluation and re-training of all disbanded SARS officers
\nbefore they can be re-deployed; and increase in Police salary.\u201d<\/p>\n

The President declared: \u201dWe accepted all the demands and proceeded
\nimmediately to scrap SARS and started the process of addressing the
\nother demands.<\/p>\n

\u201dUnfortunately, the protesters refused to call off the protest and
\nengage the Government to address their grievances. Instead, they became
\nemboldened and gradually turned violent.\u201d<\/p>\n

President Buhari expressed concern that in the mayhem that ensued, many
\nlives have been lost, a number of public and private properties
\ncompletely destroyed or vandalized.<\/p>\n

Reiterating his pledge to Nigerians from the nationwide broadcast
\nThursday, the President reaffirmed:<\/p>\n

\u201dWe will continue to improve good governance through our democratic
\nprocess including through sustained engagement.<\/p>\n

\u201dWe shall also continue to ensure that liberty and freedom, as well as
\nthe fundamental rights of all citizens, are protected. Here, I want to
\nalso reaffirm our commitment to preserving the unity of this country.\u201d<\/p>\n

The President thanked the former Heads of State for attending the
\nmeeting and their invaluable comments, observations, and advice adding
\nthat \u201dNigerians expect nothing less from responsible statesmen.\u201d<\/p>\n

Each of the former leaders commended President Buhari for steps taken so
\nfar to restore calm and order to the country and also applauded the
\npresidential broadcast of Thursday as detailed and soothing to the
\ncountry.<\/p>\n

\u201dI commend the speech of last night. The nation had been waiting. You
\nmade points that I believe need to be commended. Peaceful demonstration
\nis part of democratic practice. The demands of the genuine protesters
\nwere accepted, and you are working on implementation. We commend you,\u201d
\nformer President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, said.<\/p>\n

The former heads of state were unanimous in their view that generation
\nof employment and growing the economy including through direct foreign
\ninvestments were critical to checking youth restiveness.<\/p>\n

They also expressed their condolences to the bereaved families of
\ncivilians, policemen and soldiers killed as a result of the violent
\nprotest, and reaffirmed the commitment to respect the fundamental rights
\nof citizens, including for peaceful protest as enshrined in the
\nConstitution.<\/p>\n

The former Heads of State also condemned the divisive and inciting
\npronouncements of separatists and were of the opinion that such acts
\nshould be stopped.<\/p>\n

Equally, the former leaders commended the actions taken by governors to
\naddress the demands of the ENDSARS protesters and their efforts to check
\nthe excesses of those who perpetrated violent acts and conduct.<\/p>\n

Finally, they called on youth to pursue peaceful means, in seeking
\nredress through engagement with Government and encouraged further
\nconversation with the youths and other stakeholders in the country.<\/p>\n
