Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi has said that it was
\nlegitimate to protest but illegitimate to destroy government properties
\nduring a protest.<\/p>\n

Amaechi in a statement on Sunday said that those who took advantage of
\nthe #EndSARS protest to vandalise and loot government property should be
\nmade to face the full wrath of the law.<\/p>\n

He stated this during an assessment tour of the NPA headquarters in
\nLagos, to ascertain the level of damage caused by the protesters.<\/p>\n

He said that it was not out of place to embark on a peaceful protest,
\nbut protesters ought to have been guided by the laws of the land during
\nthe protest.<\/p>\n

\u201dThis is completely disastrous. It is not enough to vent your anger
\nabout police brutality in this manner. How does damaging government
\nproperty concern the police?<\/p>\n

\u201cWhether you like it or not this will be refurbished or rebuilt with
\ngovernment funds.<\/p>\n

\u201dThat means the funds also belong to those who have set this place
\nablaze. In governance, those who commit crimes should be held liable and
\nappropriate punishment meted out on them.<\/p>\n

\u201dI was a student from 1983 to 1987, and if you look at Nigeria\u2019s
\nhistory, you would know that that was a period when the Nigerian
\nstudents were always out on the streets, we never burnt down anything.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe rights to protest is defined in the laws of Nigeria, it doesn\u2019t
\ninclude burning people’s houses or places, it doesn\u2019t include blocking
\nmajor highways or minor roads.<\/p>\n

\u201dThe law said you should protest by the side of the road, it didn\u2019t say
\nyou should protest and block the roads because there are other road
\nusers.<\/p>\n

\u201d I may not like police brutality and I didn\u2019t protest, it is legitimate
\nto protest but it is illegitimate to take other people\u2019s rights, the
\nrights to protest is defined in the constitution but it does not include
\nburning people\u2019s houses and government properties.<\/p>\n

\u201cI still have my right to be able to drive in and out. So, if we don\u2019t
\npunish those who caused these damages others may do it again,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Amaechi said decisions had already been taken for the management of the
\nNPA to proceed to the Federal Executive Council to ask for the
\nreconstruction of the building depending on the integrity.(NAN)<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
