The Federal Government of Nigeria has reacted to a list by the United
\nStates which placed Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” with
\nsevere religious violations.<\/p>\n
The Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed in a statement
\ntitled \u2018Nigeria Denies Religious Freedom Violation Allegation\u2019 said
\nNigeria jealously protects religious freedom as enshrined in the
\ncountry\u2019s constitution and takes seriously any infringements in this
\nregard.<\/p>\n
He described the US inclusion of Nigeria on the list as a case of
\n\u201chonest disagreement between the two nations on the causes of violence
\nin Nigeria.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201dNigeria does not engage in religious freedom violation, neither does it
\nhave a policy of religious persecution. Victims of insecurity and
\nterrorism in the country are adherents of Christianity, Islam and other
\nreligions,\u201d the Minister said.<\/p>\n
The United States on Monday for the first time added Nigeria to a
\nblacklist on religious freedom, paving the way for potential sanctions
\nif it does not improve its record.<\/p>\n
Secretary of State Mike Pompeo designated Nigeria as a \u201cCountry of
\nParticular Concern\u201d for religious freedom, alongside nations that
\ninclude China, Iran, Pakistan, and Saudi Arabia.<\/p>\n
