The Nigerian military on Saturday made some disclosures on how it<\/div>\n
\n
\n

carried out the rescue operation of the 344 boys kidnapped from their
\nschool in Kankara, Katsina State, on Dec. 11.<\/p>\n

It disclosed that while kinetic and non-kinetic approaches were used to
\nensure all the boys were rescued unhurt, there was resistance from the
\nabductors who laid ambush against the troops.<\/p>\n

Maj.-Gen. John Enenche, the Coordinator, Defence Media Operations, and
\nretired Maj.-Gen. Ahmed Jibrin, former Director, Military Intelligence,
\ngave the accounts on Saturday when they featured on a special edition of
\nthe Nigeria Television Authority programme, \u201cGood Morning Nigeria.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jibrin is currently the Special Adviser, Technical, to the Minister of
\nDefence, retired Maj.-Gen. Bashir Magashi.<\/p>\n

Jibrin said following the abduction of the boys, the minister led a
\ndelegation, including the Service Chiefs and National Security Adviser,
\nto Katsina and Kankara.<\/p>\n

He said the minister gave the rules of engagement directing the troops
\nto ensure the abducted boys were rescued without casualties and within
\nthe shortest time possible.<\/p>\n

\u201cFollowing the directive, the troop closed in on the abductors from four
\ndifferent fronts, including the reinforcement that was made from other
\ndivisions to ensure that the entire location was sealed off.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe bandits were all under siege and they were fully aware of that,
\nfeeling the impacts of the presence of the troops both from the air and
\non the ground.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen they approached the location where the boys were held, the troops
\nencountered some pockets of opposition which they cleared and moved
\ndeeper into the forest.<\/p>\n

\u201cAlthough there was no casualty on the part of the boys, a lot of the
\nbandits were neutralised because, in the attempt by the military to move
\nforward, they laid an ambush in two places along the way.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn fact, in the second place where they laid ambush, there was serious
\nresistance because they were hiding and occupied the road.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey delayed the movement of the troop for some hours before they were
\nneutralised,\u2019\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n

Jibrin said while the troops were on the field, negotiations were
\nongoing at another level of the rescue efforts.<\/p>\n

He said the troop could not completely demobilise the bandits because of
\npossible collateral damage as the abducted boys were used as human
\nshield.<\/p>\n

On the claim by the Boko Haram terrorists that they were responsible for
\nthe abduction, Jibrin said the group was only seeking cheap relevance.<\/p>\n

\u201cShekau does not have the reach to carry out the abduction because a lot
\nis being done to stop them in the North-East.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe is just taking the advantage of what happened to get publicity
\nlocally and internationally, it is clear that the abduction was done by
\nbandits<\/p>\n

\u201cAll their efforts when they were trying to reach out to the bandits,
\nwhich they did, were monitored,\u2019\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n

On his part, Enenche said the rescue mission, like any other one, was a
\ndelicate operation because if it was not carried out very
\nprofessionally, the tide could turn negatively.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is an operation where you do not rely on your capacity on
\nplatforms and mechanical weapons but your ability to effectively carry
\nout the mission with unarmed combat.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis means you have to silence your enemies and take your objective
\naway without firing a shot.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is very delicate in the sense that if you do not manage the
\noperation well, the children who are in between you and the enemies will
\nnow become the victims.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen they become the victims, the people outside there will attribute
\nit to failure on the part of your security forces,\u2019\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n

He said the special troops deployed on the mission were on the spot and
\ncould not have blinked their eyes for even one hour all through the days
\nof the mission<\/p>\n

Enenche said the information provided locally were also very encouraging
\nwhile the support they got from all the stakeholders was of assistance.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere was no conspiracy of silence. All that we needed were provided
\neven from the locals and before you know it we were able to locate the
\nplace.<\/p>\n

\u201cAll the kinetic and non-kinetic blockade were all effectively
\nmonitored.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is to the extent that even when they were going to leave their
\nenclave to make bulk purchases from the market, we got the information,\u201d
\nhe said.<\/p>\n

Enenche said a lot was done during the rescue mission to ensure that
\nthere was no trigger happy incident as well as fright release from the
