A pressure group, Equity Movement in Anambra, has\u00a0 appealed for a power
\nshift to the southern part of\u00a0 the state, as the contest for the
\nNovember 2021 governorship poll gears up.<\/p>\n
Mr Gaius Ezeh, Chairman of the group, made the appeal at a stakeholders\u2019
\nforum on Tuesday in Ukpor, Nnewi South Local Government Area (LGA) of
\nthe state.<\/p>\n
According to him, allowing power to shift to Anambra South Senatorial
\nzone will ensure equity, fair play, justice and peace, as well as
\nsocio-economic and political growth of the state.<\/p>\n
\u201dI want to appeal to political parties and aspirants from Anambra
\nCentral and North senatorial zones to allow only those from Anambra
\nsouth to contest in the November 2021 governorship poll in the state.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn the 2017 governorship election in the state, almost all political
\nparties zoned their governorship position to the North senatorial
\ndistrict, as the zone had never produced a governor for the state.<\/p>\n
\u201cAnambra Central senatorial district did three years and 10 months under
\nDr Chris Ngige, and eight years under Mr Peter Obi. So, the zone held
\nthe governorship for almost 12 years.<\/p>\n
\u201cTherefore, for equity, all political parties must now consider the
\nSouthern zone in the 2021 poll. Equity demands that the South should
\nhave it.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe also believe that adherence to the zoning agreement will reduce the
\ncost of politicking and problems that comes with do or die politics,\u201d he
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
Ezeh said the group would continue to propagate the rotation of office
\nof the governor among the three senatorial zones of Anambra North, South
\nand Central.<\/p>\n
Also speaking, an elder statesman and First Republic Minister of
\nAviation, Chief Mbazulike Amechi, lamented the high number of aspirants
\nfrom the Anambra South senatorial zone.<\/p>\n
Amechi urged the aspirants to coordinate behind a single candidate from
\nthe zone, who had credibility, proven integrity, sound education,
\ncompetence and would prioritise the welfare of the people.<\/p>\n
In his views, Sen. Nnamdi Eriobuna, who represented Anambra South in the
\nSenate from 1999 to 2003, said that Anambra South was due to produce the
\nnext governor.<\/p>\n
Eriobuna urged aspirants from the zone to coordinate themselves and work
\ntowards winning at their various party primary elections.<\/p>\n
\u201cAfter the primaries, we can now scale the number of candidates from the
\nSouth zone and endorse a candidate that would contest in the election,\u201d
\nhe said.<\/p>\n
Some aspirants on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP),
\nAnambra South senatorial zone, who attended the forum were Mr Valentine
\nOzigbo, the former Managing Director of Transcorp.<\/p>\n
Dr Ifedi Okwenna who served as Special Assistant (Political) to former
\nPresident Olusegun Obasanjo, was also in attendance.<\/p>\n
Another aspirants on the platform of the Labour Party (LP), Group Capt.
\nNnamdi Nnoruka, and some traditional rulers also graced the occasion.
