Agency (NIMASA), Dr. Bashir Jamoh, says the Badagry Deep Seaport project
\nin Lagos State is a strategic step towards the development of Nigeria as
\na global maritime hub.<\/p>\n

Jamoh stated this when he paid a courtesy visit to the paramount ruler
\nof Badagry Kingdom, His Royal Majesty, De-Wheno Aholu Menu Toyi 1, the
\nAkran of Badagry.<\/p>\n

The visit was symbolic, coming on the first day of the year. Jamoh said
\nit was meant to honour the traditional ruler and his kingdom for
\nallocating land to NIMASA to establish a presence in the community, as
\nNigeria’s maritime regulatory authority, before the take-off of the deep
\nseaport project, which foundation is expected to be laid this month.<\/p>\n

The Director-General stated, “Nigeria is strategically located at a
\nsignificant point in the Atlantic Ocean, with about 853 kilometres
\ncoastline, which gives us a geographic advantage to become a maritime
\nhub for not only the West and Central African region, but also the
\nentire maritime trading world. And with over 70 per cent of cargo bound
\nfor West and Central Africa destined for Nigeria, we also have a huge
\ncommercial advantage.<\/p>\n

“The Badagry Deep Seaport, planned to be Africa’s biggest and most
\nadvanced seaport when it becomes operational, would help to maximise
\nthis extraordinary maritime potential. This is more so given the
\nstrategic place of Badagry in the region.”<\/p>\n

Jamoh thanked the Akran for his hospitality and the land allocated to
\nNIMASA. He promised that the land would be judiciously utilised. The
\nDirector-General assured that he would work with the traditional ruler
\nand the kingdom to see to the implementation of the deep seaport
\nproject.<\/p>\n

Earlier, Jamoh, who was personally received at the palace by the Akran
\nand his council of chiefs, was presented with the Badagry Pilgrimage
\nAward. It is a special recognition accorded dignitaries for visiting the
\ntown.<\/p>\n

Commenting on the deep seaport project, the Alipoto of Badagry Kingdom,
\nChief Gbenga Fayemi, said it was important for Badagry and the country,
\nstressing that the project is suitably located since Badagry lies
\nbetween the lagoon and the ocean.<\/p>\n

In her own remarks, Princess A. F. I. Senami Akran said the visit of the
\nNIMASA Director-General and the coming of the deep seaport to Badagry
\nrepresented a blessing to the community.<\/p>\n

The Badagry Deep Seaport project is being executed through a
\npublic-private partnership overseen by the Federal Ministry of
\nTransportation, Federal Ministry of Trade and Investment, and Lagos
\nState Government, as well as a private consortium of APM Terminals,
\nOrlean Invest, Oando, Terminal Investment Limited (TIL), and Macquarie.<\/p>\n

The deep seaport is located in the Gberefun area of Badagry, along the
\nLagos-Badagry Expressway, about 55 kilometres (34 miles) west of the
\nApapa and Tin Can Island Port complexes. The port is proposed to be
\nabout four kilometres of quay and approximately 620 hectares of
\ndedicated port facilities. It will also include facilities for handling
\ncontainers, dry bulk, liquid bulk, roll-on-roll-off, and general cargo,
\nas well as oil and gas operations support.<\/p>\n

The port will have about 480 hectares of Industrial and Logistic Park
\nZone.<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
