Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike says the federal government<\/div>\n
has been playing politics with the Ogoni environment remediation<\/div>\n
programme recommended by the United Nations Environment Programme<\/div>\n
(UNEP).<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
He noted that Ogoni having played a pivotal role in the economic<\/div>\n
development of Rivers State and the country deserves more than what is<\/div>\n
currently being offered to the area.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Governor Wike stated this during the commissioning of the 16.06<\/div>\n
kilometers dual carriage Sakpenwa-Bori Highway by the Governor of Enugu<\/div>\n
State Dr. Ifeanyichukwu Lawrence Ugwuanyi in Bori, Khana Local<\/div>\n
Government Area of Rivers State on Tuesday.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
The governor urged Ogoni people to stop believing those who use Ogoni<\/div>\n
clean up exercise at the turn of election year to deceive them and<\/div>\n
wondered why clean-up never happens when elections are over.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
“I am not like Federal Government. They promised you they will do Ogoni<\/div>\n
clean up. Has it been cleaned? I promised you road, have I done it? So<\/div>\n
you can see the difference between our party and their own party. The<\/div>\n
difference is clear.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
“When election comes\u00a0 in 2023, they will start another clean up. You<\/div>\n
people don’t even ask question. Why is it a year to election that Ogoni<\/div>\n
clean up will always commence? Now that there is no election are they<\/div>\n
doing clean up now? Watch from next year they will start clean up.”<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Governor Wike said it\u00a0 has remained undisputed that only the governors<\/div>\n
of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are delivering development<\/div>\n
projects to their people.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
The governor\u00a0 challenged those who feel uncomfortable with his public<\/div>\n
declarations to also showcase their projects and invite persons of<\/div>\n
repute to commission them as he has done since December.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
He stated that\u00a0 because of the existing mutual trust between his<\/div>\n
leadership team and the people, sufficient progress have been achieved<\/div>\n
in Ogoni land and in the entire state in terms of project delivery.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Governor Wike announced the commencement of the phase two of the newly<\/div>\n
commissioned road, which will now be from Bori to Kono and it will be<\/div>\n
awarded to the same construction firm, CCECC.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
“Let me tell you, I will dualise from here,\u00a0 Bori to Kono. It will be<\/div>\n
handled by the same contractor to maintain the same standard.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
“So, when I finish and go, I will tell Ogoni people that it was in my<\/div>\n
tenure that you got road; dualised road, from Saakpenwa to Kono with<\/div>\n
street lights.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
“This is what we call development. You can leave Port Harcourt and come<\/div>\n
back home any day, any time. This is what makes a city.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
“When I say Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors are doing well,<\/div>\n
people are angry. If they are doing well,\u00a0 let them call us. Is it<\/div>\n
hidden?<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
“PDP Governors, we are challenging\u00a0 others, tell us what you’re doing.<\/div>\n
It is not to take money to go and buy one governor. That’s not it. We<\/div>\n
are talking about governors that are interested in the development of<\/div>\n
their people. We are commissioning projects.”<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Governor Wike said he promised and within the specified period,\u00a0 he had<\/div>\n
delivered to then what he promised to demonstrate that his party is<\/div>\n
different from the other that is associated with failed promises.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
The governor has meanwhile directed the chairman of Khana Local<\/div>\n
government area to ensure that the installed street lights are switched<\/div>\n
on every night to improve the security situation in the area.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Governor of Enugu State. Dr. Ifeanyichukwu Lawrence Ugwuanyi<\/div>\n
acknowledged that many projects have been inaugurated by Governor Wike,<\/div>\n
including the Saakpenwa -Bori road which was a campaign promise that has<\/div>\n
been fulfilled.<\/div>\n

“Today’s event is significant as it epitomises the desirable fellowship<\/div>\n
among colleague governors while providing opportunity for experience<\/div>\n
sharing and other discourses on service delivery.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
“I congratulate your Excellency, Governor Wike on the accomplishment of<\/div>\n
this infrastructural milestone among many others which will undoubtedly<\/div>\n
make life more meaningful for the people of Ogoni land<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
“I understand that this strategic road project was a campaign promise<\/div>\n
that has been truthfully fulfilled. Expectedly, it gladdens the hearts<\/div>\n
of Ogoni people and reinforces their faith in our constitutional<\/div>\n
democracy.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
“I enjoin the good people of Ogoni land and entire Rivers State to<\/div>\n
continue to support Governor Wike with their prayers and wise counsel as<\/div>\n
he takes Rivers State to the next level.”<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
In their good will message, former President of the Movement for the<\/div>\n
Survival of Ogoni People (MOSOP), Ledum Mitee said several governors<\/div>\n
used the road as point of political campaigns, but all failed to fulfil<\/div>\n
such promises.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
He said if the money wasted on the abandoned monorail by the immediate<\/div>\n
past administration was properly channelled, more flyovers and roads<\/div>\n
would have been achieved in the State.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Similarly, the president of Kagote, Hon Emma Deeyaah said governor Wike<\/div>\n
has wiped sway their tears and solved the nightmare situation that the<\/div>\n
road caused the people.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
President of Gbokabari,\u00a0 Senator Ben Birabi noted that such quality of<\/div>\n
roads are hardly delivered in Ogoni land and said Governor Wike has<\/div>\n
re-energised the spirit of freedom in the state and has performed above<\/div>\n
expectations despite the lean financial resources.<\/div>\n

Rivers State Commissioner for Works, Mr.\u00a0 Elloka Tasie-Amadi, said<\/div>\n
again, the Wike administration has demonstrated commitment in delivering<\/div>\n
long term service projects that will enhance socioeconomic life of the<\/div>\n
people.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
“This project is a 16.06 km DUAL carriage highway, with a 2m wide<\/div>\n
concrete median, an overall road width of 22.3m, drainage network of<\/div>\n
12.02 Km, 480 double arm streetlight poles complete with transformers<\/div>\n
and generators to power the streetlights.<\/div>\n

“It used to be a deplorable 7.3m wide road but what we have today is 3<\/div>\n
times wider than it was then. If we were to stretch this road into a<\/div>\n
single carriage way it would stretch from here all the way to Kono a<\/div>\n
distance of about 36 km from Sapkenwa. This is excluding the added<\/div>\n
mileage we would achieve by converting the concrete median and street<\/div>\n
lighting to asphalt pavement.”<\/div>\n
