Godwin Obaseki of Edo opened his defence on Tuesday at the Federal<br \/>\nHigh Court Abuja, calling\u00a0 two witnesses one of whom was the Deputy<br \/>\nRegistrar, Legal, University of Ibadan, Mr Abayomi Ajayi.<\/p>\n<p>Ajayi told the court that the fact that some parts of Obaseki\u2019s original<br \/>\ndegree certificate were missing in the photocopy he attached to his INEC<br \/>\nform EC9 and 001 did not amount to forgery.<\/p>\n<p>The witness, who was led in evidence by Mr Ken Mozia (SAN), Obaseki\u2019s<br \/>\ncounsel, explained that Obaseki\u2019s photocopy was incomplete due to the<br \/>\nprocess of photocopying.<\/p>\n<p>The witness also told the court that the university was not dealing with<br \/>\nthis allegation for the first time as the Minister of State for<br \/>\nEducation had once brought the issue before the institution.<\/p>\n<p>He maintained that from the records of the university, Obaseki was<br \/>\nadmitted as student in 1976 through direct entry and that he graduated<br \/>\nin the year 1979, during the tenure of Prof. Tekena Tamino as Vice<br \/>\nChancellor and S.J Okufu as Registrar.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI will not regard the photocopy of the original certificate as forged<br \/>\nbut incomplete photocopying because the certificate of the University of<br \/>\nIbadan is larger than the paper upon which the photocopy was made,\u201d<br \/>\nAjayi submitted.<\/p>\n<p>He then went ahead to tender photocopies of various sizes of papers and<br \/>\ntheir outcome when the original was not reduced.<\/p>\n<p>Other documents he tendered to prove that Obaseki was a product of the<br \/>\nuniversity included relevant pages of the congregation for admission to<br \/>\ndegrees, award of diplomas and certificates and 31st Foundation Day<br \/>\nCeremony in September 1979, Obaseki\u2019s application amongst others.<\/p>\n<p>The authorities of university of Ibadan had in June last year, before a<br \/>\nFederal High Court in Benin, cleared Obaseki of similar forgery<br \/>\nallegations.<br \/>\nThe institution said that Obaseki graduated from there and was<br \/>\naccordingly awarded the degree certificate of Bachelor of Arts (BA) in<br \/>\nClassical Studies in 1979.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier, the first defense witness, Mr Charity Aguobawekhina, Chairman<br \/>\nof the Edo State Law Reform Commission, tendered the original of<br \/>\nObaseki\u2019s certificates, including the disputed BA Arts Degree in<br \/>\nClassical Studies.<\/p>\n<p>The witness who claimed to be a close associate of Obaseki, informed the<br \/>\ncourt that he made the said incomplete photocopy that Obaseki attached<br \/>\nto his nomination form that he submitted to INEC.<\/p>\n<p>He added that part of the photocopy attached to form EC9 were cut off<br \/>\nbecause of the largeness of the original certificate.<br \/>\nHe also tendered the primary school certificate obtained by Obaseki in<br \/>\n1971, School Certificate obtained in 1973 and Higher School Certificate<br \/>\nobtained in 1971.<\/p>\n<p>Other documents were the University of Ibadan degree certificate<br \/>\nobtained in 1979 and another Masters Degree certificate from Pace<br \/>\nUniversity obtained by Obaseki as his educational qualification.<\/p>\n<p>All the certificates, which were original copies were admitted as<br \/>\nexhibits by the trial judge.<\/p>\n<p>Under cross examination, the witness insisted that the photocopy of the<br \/>\ndegree certificate, which had the signature of the university\u2019s chief<br \/>\nregistrar, the date of issuance of the certificate and the name of the<br \/>\nvice chancellor did not make the photocopy of the certificate a forged<br \/>\ndocument.<\/p>\n<p>The All Progressives Congress (APC) and one of its chieftains, Mr<br \/>\nWilliams Edobor, dragged Obaseki to court for allegedly forging his<br \/>\nuniversity certificate he submitted to INEC to aid his qualification for<br \/>\nthe Sept. 19, 2020 governorship election in Edo.<\/p>\n<p>The plaintiffs wanted the court to disqualify Obaseki,\u00a0 who won the<br \/>\nelection, in the event that he was found to have forged his university<br \/>\ndegree obtained from the university of Ibadan in 1979.
