{"id":77587,"date":"2021-01-07T20:40:46","date_gmt":"2021-01-07T19:40:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/?p=77587"},"modified":"2021-01-07T20:40:46","modified_gmt":"2021-01-07T19:40:46","slug":"capitol-raid-wife-of-senate-majority-leader-resigns-as-transportation-secretary","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/exclusive\/capitol-raid-wife-of-senate-majority-leader-resigns-as-transportation-secretary\/","title":{"rendered":"Capitol raid: Wife of Senate Majority leader resigns as Transportation Secretary"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"m#msg-f:1688256502639813791\" class=\"mail-message expanded\">\n<div class=\"mail-message-header spacer\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"mail-message-content collapsible zoom-normal mail-show-images msg4735342733978315059\">\n<div class=\"clear\">\n<div dir=\"ltr\">\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Elaine Chao, transportation Secretary, and wife of Senate Majority leader, Mitch McConnell, has resigned in protest after a violent mob overran the Capitol after being incited by President Trump, a source with knowledge of her decision said Thursday.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Chao would become the first Cabinet official, and the highest-ranking member of the administration, to resign in the wake of Trump&#8217;s incendiary rally and its violent aftermath on Wednesday.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>&#8220;Yesterday, our country experienced a traumatic and entirely avoidable event as supporters of the President stormed the Capitol building following a rally he addressed,&#8221; Chao wrote in a letter to Transportation Department staff, obtained by The Hill. &#8220;As I&#8217;m sure is the case with many of you, it has deeply troubled me in a way that I simply cannot set aside.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Her exit is a sharp rebuke of a president who has alienated even some of his closest supporters with his increasingly unhinged rhetoric. Chao has served as Transportation secretary since Trump&#8217;s inauguration. She served as Secretary of Labor for eight years under President George W. Bush.<\/p>\n<p>In her letter to employees, Chao said she would resign effective Monday.
