The Area II Command of the Nigeria Customs Service, Onne Port in Rivers,<\/div>\n
says it generated \u20a6118.9billion (\u20a6118,959,214,999.53k) in the out gone<\/div>\n
year 2020.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
The figure was announced on Wednesday by Comptroller Mohammed Auwal,<\/div>\n
Area Controller, Area II Command, at a media briefing in Onne Port.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
According to Auwal, this figure is N11.6 billion (\u20a611,623,072,175.04)<\/div>\n
higher than the N107.3 billion (\u20a6107,336,142,824.29) generated by the<\/div>\n
command from January to December of 2019.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Auwal also stated that the command\u2019s enforcement and anti-smuggling<\/div>\n
personnel made a total of 37 seizures with total duty paid value of over<\/div>\n
one billion naira (\u20a61,008,266,282.53) within the period in focus.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
The Controller, who said that that news conference was the first since<\/div>\n
he took over the command on Sept. 1, 2020, disclosed that two suspects<\/div>\n
were arrested in connection with some of the seizures.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Auwal also said that the command recorded a total quantity of<\/div>\n
2,577,803.31 metric tonnes of cargoes with Free on Board value (FOB) of<\/div>\n
$63,497,688.03 (N24.1billion or N24, 129, 121, 451.4) on exports.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
He said the command also recorded N278.8 million (\u20a6278,883,780.13) under<\/div>\n
the Nigerian Export Supervision Scheme (NESS) in 2020.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Auwal expressed gratitude to Comptroller General, retired Col. Hameed<\/div>\n
Ibrahim Ali, \u201cfor providing the result oriented leadership that has<\/div>\n
helped us to excel in many ways\u2019\u2019.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
According to him, the feat was achieved by command\u2019s personnel in the<\/div>\n
face of several challenges that impacted on shipping and port activities<\/div>\n
last year.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u201cOur operatives were resilient, being at work always, even during the<\/div>\n
COVID-19 Pandemic outbreak and the nationwide lockdown that followed.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u201cThis increase in collection is fallout of due diligence and zero<\/div>\n
tolerance for compromise on the part of our officers and men.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u201cThey were always at work in full observance of the Covid19 protocols \u2013<\/div>\n
hand washing, use of bottle hand sanitisers, wearing of masks, avoiding<\/div>\n
handshakes and strictly observing physical distancing.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u201cWe have never let our guards down even before the announcement of a<\/div>\n
second wave of the virus and we didn\u2019t allow it impact adversely on our<\/div>\n
functions,\u2019\u2019 he said.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Auwal said his command also made remarkable increase from its N94<\/div>\n
billion (\u20a694,044,676,428.17) collected in 2018.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
He noted that the command also achieved \u20a613 billion Naira monthly<\/div>\n
collection for the first time in its 37 years history under his watch.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
A breakdown of the seizures made during the period are: 6,249,900<\/div>\n
tablets of tramadol; 5,615 kegs of 25 litre of vegetable oil; 817 bags<\/div>\n
of 50kg of Rice; 3,047 bales of second hand clothing; and 86 bales of<\/div>\n
used hand bags.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Others are:\u00a0 35 bales of used shoes; 1,460 pieces of used tyres; 6,500<\/div>\n
pies of Aluminium zinc; 1,738 cartons of foreign soaps; 650 pieces of<\/div>\n
canvas; two units of Hiace bus; 3,440 pieces of donkey hides\/skin; and<\/div>\n
67 bales of fabrics.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Also, eight units of truck; 331 pieces of unprocessed wood; 76 pieces of<\/div>\n
doors; 641 bags of white cements; 110 pieces of car fan; and 100 pieces<\/div>\n
of motor radiator were seized by the command during the period.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
He said: \u201cWe have strengthened our relationship with Importers,<\/div>\n
exporters, freight forwarders and other port users whose function<\/div>\n
interface with Nigeria Customs Service in Onne Port.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u201cWithin the period I took charge, I have met with them separately and<\/div>\n
collectively even as we all have resolved to consolidate on our<\/div>\n
relationships in the interest of the government and our economy.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u201cWe have seen marked improvement in compliance level continual promotion<\/div>\n
of due process in all we do.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u201cOur engagements have reinforced the promotion of ease of doing<\/div>\n
business, trade facilitation with emphasis on sincere declarations as a<\/div>\n
way of saving time and making legitimate profits.\u2019\u2019<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Auwal said his command also enjoyed very robust inter agency<\/div>\n
collaboration with sister government agencies.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
He said the agencies included the Nigerian Navy; Nigerian Army; Nigeria<\/div>\n
Police Force; Nigeria Immigration Service; Department of State Service;<\/div>\n
National Agency for Food Drug Administration and Control; National Drug<\/div>\n
Law Enforcement Agency; Nigerian Ports Authority; and Standards<\/div>\n
Organisation of Nigeria.<\/div>\n

\u201cOur relationships have resulted in information sharing, crime<\/div>\n
prevention, promotion of national economic interest and security,\u2019\u2019 he<\/div>\n
said.<\/div>\n

He urged the command\u2019s stakeholders, particularly port users, to<\/div>\n
continue to understand that \u201ccompliance is vital for seamless cargo<\/div>\n
clearance, exit, import and export\u2019\u2019.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
He said: \u201cThis is how importers will enjoy trade facilitation, ease of<\/div>\n
business by following the due process.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u201cI urge them once again to keep abreast with the extant import and<\/div>\n
export prohibition lists, avoid duty evasion and imbibe the virtue of<\/div>\n
transparency at all times.\u2019\u2019<\/div>\n
