The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), has inaugurated two
\ncommittees to facilitate reforms in the commission and drive projects in
\nthe Niger Delta.<\/p>\n
A statement issued by Ibitoye Abosede, the commission\u2019s Director of
\nCorporate Affairs on Wednesday, said that the NDDC\u2019s Interim
\nAdministrator, Mr Efiong Akwa inaugurated the committees.<\/p>\n
The two committees are NDDC Reforms Committee and Project Commissioning
\nCommittee.<\/p>\n
Mr Anslem Agommuoh, NDDC\u2019s Director of Information Technology, is
\nchairing the reforms committee, while Mr Julius George, also a director
\nin the Commission chairs the project commissioning committee.<\/p>\n
The interim administration assured that the commission had prioritised
\ncompletion and inauguration of big projects in the region.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is a thing of joy that the 13-floor new NDDC permanent headquarters
\nwhich has been outstanding for over 20 years has now been completed.<\/p>\n
\u201cNow, we have a befitting headquarters building that is due for
\ncommissioning, and we look forward to the end of January and second week
\nof February for the historic commissioning,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
He said that President Muhammadu Buhari would be invited to inaugurate
\nthe building at a date convenient for him.<\/p>\n
According to him, the people of the region want to see physical
\ninfrastructure on ground as against listening to stories coming from the
\ncommission.<\/p>\n
\u201cSo, we cannot continue to deny members of the various communities the
\nbenefits of projects sited in their areas.<\/p>\n
\u201cMany projects, including roads, bridges, schools, hostels and health
\ncentres have been completed but were not handed over to communities or
\nend users.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are departing from the era when projects are executed and left to
\nrot or when we just inaugurate projects and leave them without anybody
\ntaking ownership.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen projects are commissioned and taken over by benefiting
\ncommunities, the people will have cause to thank the Federal Government
\nand NDDC,\u2019\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n
Akwa said the committees would usher reforms to enable the intervention
\nagency to deliver its core mandate to people of the region.<\/p>\n
According to him, recommendations of the reforms committee will be
\nforwarded to the Minister of Niger Delta Affairs for onward transmission
\nto the National Assembly for appropriate legislation.<\/p>\n
\u201cFor instance, we want to propose that the position of Executive
\nDirector, Projects should be renamed Executive Director Engineering and
\nTechnical Services,\u201d he said. (NAN)<\/p>\n
