Twenty-three people died in Norway within days of receiving their first dose of the Pfizer Covid-19 vaccine with 13 of those deaths apparently related to the\u00a0side effects<\/a>\u00a0of the shots, New York Post reported citing\u00a0health officials<\/a>.<\/p>\n

All 13 were nursing home patients and at least\u00a080 years<\/span>\u00a0old.<\/p>\n

Common reactions to the vaccine, including\u00a0fever<\/a>\u00a0and nausea, “may have\u00a0contributed<\/span>\u00a0to a fatal outcome in some frail patients,” New York Post quoted Sigurd Hortemo, chief physician at the\u00a0Norwegian<\/span>Medicines Agency, as saying in a statement on Friday.<\/p>\n

While officials aren’t expressing serious concern, they are adjusting their guidance on who should receive the vaccine.<\/p>\n

More than 30,000 people in Norway have received the first shot of the Pfizer or\u00a0Moderna<\/a>coronavirus vaccine since late last month.<\/p>\n

Agency’s\u00a0medical director<\/span>\u00a0Steinar Madsen has stated that the “agency is not alarmed by this.”<\/p>\n

“It is quite clear that these vaccines have very little risk, with a small exception for the frailest patients. Doctors must now carefully consider who should be vaccinated. Those who are very frail and at the very\u00a0end of life<\/span>can be vaccinated after an individual assessment,” he said.<\/p>\n

The agency<\/span>\u00a0reported Thursday that a total of 29 people had suffered\u00a0side effects<\/span>, including\u00a0the 13<\/span>\u00a0people who died.<\/p>\n

Twenty-one women and\u00a0eight men<\/span>experienced\u00a0side effects, officials said.<\/p>\n

Besides those who died, nine had serious\u00a0side effects\u00a0— including\u00a0allergic reactions<\/span>, strong\u00a0discomfort<\/span>\u00a0and severe fever — while seven had less serious ones, including severe pain at the injection site, New York Post reported.<\/p>\n

According to health officials around 400\u00a0people die<\/span>\u00a0each week in the nursing home population.<\/p>\n

A Pfizer rep said the company is “aware of reported deaths” following the administration of the vaccine in Norway and is working with the\u00a0Norwegian\u00a0Medicines Agency to gather all the relevant information.<\/p>\n

The total number of coronavirus cases reported in Norway is 58,202, while the death toll stands at 517, according to the\u00a0Johns Hopkins University<\/a>.<\/p>\n
