President Muhammadu Buhari Thursday in Abuja warned that stoking ethnic
\nand religious prejudices will not augur well for the development of the
\ncountry, adding that his administration will continue to create the
\nenabling environment for religious freedom as guaranteed by the Nigerian
\nConstitution.<\/p>\n

Speaking when the leadership of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic
\nAffairs (NSCIA) led by its President-General and Sultan of Sokoto,
\nMuhammad Sa\u2019ad Abubakar, paid him a courtesy call, President Buhari
\nsaid:<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Federal Government will continue to promote religious freedom as it
\nis a constitutional responsibility. I must thank the Muslim ummah for
\npromoting inter-religious dialogue in the country. It is self-evident
\nthat if the country must work, we must continue to work together in
\nspite of our ethnic, religious and political differences because Nigeria
\nis our collective project.<\/p>\n

\u201cAccordingly, the Federal Government under my leadership does not and
\nwill not allow religious prejudice or partisanship to influence any of
\nits decisions and policies. It is my solemn decision to be fair and just
\nto all segments of society.\u201d<\/p>\n

The president assured the delegation that government was doing all
\nwithin its powers to bring the current state of insecurity to the barest
\nminimum, calling on the local community to assist the security forces as
\nthey perform their roles:<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Federal Government has worked tirelessly to combat insecurity and
\nother challenges that are confronting the country. Security is a
\nprotracted problem but we are not relenting in our efforts. Not only are
\nwe equipping the military, we are also boosting their morale to perform
\ntheir constitutional duties without undue interference. We are also
\nencouraging locales to enhance their intelligence gathering and timely
\nremitting to the security Agencies.<\/p>\n

\u201cI acknowledge that security is the first responsibility of Government
\nbut Government cannot do it alone. It requires stakeholders, such as
\nyourselves. Therefore, I urge you to lend your support to the security
\nagencies by providing information that may stem the tide of crimes and
\ninsecurity in the society.\u201d<\/p>\n

He also spoke on efforts of his administration towards making life
\nbetter for the average Nigerian:<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are diversifying the economy and putting appropriate mechanisms in
\nplace to reduce poverty and more fiercely combat corruption, regardless
\nof the status of those involved.<\/p>\n

\u201cProgrammes such as N-Power, Conditional Cash Transfer, Government
\nEnterprise and Empowerment Programme and Home-Grown School Feeding are
\njust some of the interventions made to empower Nigerians and cater for
\ntheir needs.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe National Social Investment Programme alone has directly benefited
\nfour million Nigerians through job training and financial assistance.\u201d<\/p>\n

President Buhari called on the leaders to continue \u201cspeaking to our
\npeople and to help amplify this message through your very tried and
\ntested networks\u201d and to give full backing to the Alternate School
\nProgramme which he launched on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

He said the it was \u201cdesigned to not only address our high out of school
\nrates, but it will boost our levels of Girl Child education while also
\nequipping our youth with the right tools in making decisions at every
\nturn of their lives when confronted by peddlers of evil and hateful
\nmessages\u2026 and also address the public health crises that the world is
\ncurrently facing.\u201d<\/p>\n

The president used the opportunity to appeal to Nigerians to support the
\ngovernment\u2019s efforts on COVID-19:
\n\u201cAs Government continues to work towards managing this crisis, it is
\nalso critical that you lend your voices in support of those basic but
\nfundamental protocols that can significantly curtail the spread of this
\ndisease \u2013 Washing of our hands, Using facemasks and ensuring social
\ndistancing as much as possible have been proven to be our first line of
\ndefense in the fight against this virus.<\/p>\n

\u201cFurthermore and much more important, when the vaccines which we are
\nworking hard to procure for the nation arrive, please, please join in
\nthe drive to educate people that these vaccines are meant to save lives
\nand protect everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n

Earlier in his address, Sultan Abubakar commended the president for the
\nsuccesses achieved so far in the Northeast, calling on the government to
\ndeal decisively with the banditry that is raving the Northwestern States
\nof Zamfara, Katsina, Sokoto and some parts of the North Central.<\/p>\n

While expressing confidence that security forces, with better synergy
\namong them, will overcome present challenges, he solicited for the
\ncooperation of all the governors with the federal government
\nirrespective of their political leanings, calling on Nigerians to
\nsupport the new leadership of the armed forces.<\/p>\n

The NSCIA leader also appealed to Nigerians, particularly religious
\nleaders, to refrain from making inflammatory comments that tend towards
\nsowing discord in the polity and exacerbating the current level of
\ninsecurity in the land. He asked that religious leaders making
\nsubversive comments should be called to order.<\/p>\n

The Sultan equally identified with the \u2018Hate Speech Campaign\u2019 of the
\nMinister of Information and Culture. He said \u2018Hate Speech\u2019 is
\naggravating insecurity in the country and that \u201cwe have to act.\u201d<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
