The Federal Executive Council has approved about N2billion for the<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
\n
procurement of surveillance equipment for some airports and inland
\nwaterways in the country.<\/p>\n

Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, disclosed this to
\nState House correspondents at the end of the Council meeting, presided
\nover by President Muhammadu Buhari at the Council Chamber, Presidential
\nVilla, Abuja, on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

He said N1.2 billion of the amount was approved for the purchase of
\nsurveillance equipment for the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport
\nAbuja and the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos.<\/p>\n

He said: \u201cThe Minister sought for council\u2019s approval, which was granted
\nfor a contract for the design, supply and installation of a long-range
\nthermal camera surveillance system at the Murtala Mohammed International
\nAirport, Lagos and Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport Abuja.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe total sum of the contract is N1,278,594,250. And this is in order
\nto upgrade and provide security and safety for the Nigerian Airports
\nAuthority especially to avoid incidents on the airside and runway.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Minister further revealed that the council also approved N783.5
\nmillion for the procurement of two hydrographic survey boats for
\nNational Inland Waterways Authority.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Minister of transportation sought and got council\u2019s approval for
\nthe award of contract for the procurement of two hydrographic survey
\nboats for National Inland Waterways Authority. In the sum of
\nN753,521,275 inclusive of 7.5% VAT,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The Minister, who spoke on behalf of his Transportation counterpart,
\nsaid the contract has a completion period of six months.<\/p>\n

Minister of Industry Trade and Investment, Niyi Adebayo , who also spoke
\non the outcome of the meeting, said the Council approved N35.4 billion
\nfor the building of power stations at Calabar and Kano offices of the
\nNigerian Export Processing Zones Authority.<\/p>\n

He said: \u201cMy Ministry presented a memo for the award of contract for
\nbuilding power stations on behalf of Nigerian Export Processing Zones
\nAuthority in processing zones in Calabar and Kano.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe authority received proposals from various companies and after all
\nthe evaluations were done, they awarded the contract to one of the
\ncompanies in the sum of N35,411,119,169.47.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe terms are that the company will finance 75 per cent, which is in
\nthe sum of N26,558,339,337.10, while the Export Processing Zones
\nAuthority will pay 25 per cent, which translates to N8,852,779,792.37.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor the 75 per cent of the contractor\u2019s portion, Council approved a
\npay-back period of ten years.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe plant will be completed after 11 months and it would be operated by
\nthe contractor for five years and during that five years, they will
\nbuild local capacity so that after five years, the local capacity that
\nhad been built will take over the running of the plant.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to Adebayo, government\u2019s intention of the upgrade of the two
\nzones is to create zones with world-class standards.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment is desirous of making
\nNigeria a manufacturing hub, especially now that we have signed on to
\nthe African Continental Free Trade Area Agreement.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo, by putting 24-hour power in the two processing zones, it will make
\nit more attractive to foreign investors to come and set up their
\nmanufacturing concerns here in Nigeria,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Minister of Mines and Steel Development, Olamilekan Adegbite, also told
\nthe correspondents that the council approved the concessioning of the
\nAluminium Smelting Company of Nigeria, Ikot-Abasi, in Akwa Ibom.<\/p>\n

He said: \u201cEssentially, we sought Council\u2019s approval for the Aluminium
\nSmelting Company of Nigeria, that is in Ikot-Abasi.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe BPE has concessioned that company and the company sought to be
\ncategorised as a power producer and as a strategic company, which
\nCouncil approved so that we can start the production of aluminium in
