The Durban FilmMart Institute has announced that the 12th Durban
\nFilmMart (DFM) which will take place virtually from 16 to 25 July 2021,
\nwith its call for submissions\u00a0 of film projects in development closing
\non 21 February.<\/p>\n

“Given that there is no absolute clarity on what the global situation
\nwill be with the Covid-19 pandemic in the foreseeable future, the DFM
\nInstitute board has taken a decision to implement a virtual DFM for 2021
\nfollowing on the success\u00a0 of the 2020 DFM,” says Magdalene Reddy, acting
\nGeneral Manager of the Durban FilmMart Institute. “As much as we would
\nlove to work, network and engage with filmmakers in a physical format,
\nwe need to proceed with some level of caution in continuing to service
\nour mandate of developing African film content, and ensuring everyone’s
\nsafety whilst doing so.”<\/p>\n

Key to the DFM is the bringing together of filmmakers with thought
\nleaders, film funders, festival programmers, agents, buyers, and
\ndistributors to get down to the business of making films.\u00a0 Included in
\nthis is the internationally regarded finance and pitching forum which,
\nin 2020, saw 80 film projects in development connect with possible
\nmarkets and partners and funders.<\/p>\n

“It’s a robust and highly dynamic market, that has seen countless film
\nprojects reaching festivals and screens big and small \u2013 which is
\nultimately the aim for developing content,” continues Reddy. “Some of
\nthe successful projects that had their beginnings at the DFM have been
\nofficially selected as submissions for the 2021 Academy Awards \u2013 this
\nincludes Lift like a Girl (Egypt) directed by Mayye Zayed, This is Not a
\nBurial, It’s a Resurrection (Lesotho) directed by Lemohang Jeremiah
\nMosese, You will Die at 20\u00a0 (Sudan) directed by Amjad Abu Alala, Softie
\n(Kenya) directed by Sam Soko and The Letter (Kenya) directed by Maia
\nLekow and Christopher King.<\/p>\n

Fifteen feature-length documentary and fifteen fiction projects will be
\nselected by a DFM independent adjudication committee for the pitching
\nforum where the director and producer will participate in a packaging
\nand mentorship programme. This will be followed by one-on-one meetings
\nwith international film financiers, buyers, and distributors.<\/p>\n
