Rivers State Government has released the sum of N16.6billion for the
\nupgrade of facilities at the Rivers Sate University (RSU).<\/p>\n
Announcing the release to journalists in Port Harcourt, Rivers State
\nCommissioner for Information and Communications, Paulinus Nsirim said N9
\nbillion of that sum will serve as take-off grant for the establishment
\nof new campuses of Rivers State University (RSU)\u00a0 in Ahoada,\u00a0 Emohua and
\nEtche Local Government Areas.<\/p>\n
According to him,\u00a0 N3 billion will be devoted to each of the new
\ncampuses for the construction of faculty buildings,\u00a0 hostels, offices,
\nLibraries,\u00a0 auditoriums,\u00a0 lecture halls and address other needs required
\nfor the campuses to operate maximally.<\/p>\n
“This is a landmark development in the history of the institution which
\nhas maintained one campus since its establishment in October 1980.<\/p>\n
“With the establishment of the three campuses, the communities where
\nthey are sited will be opened up for consequential development and
\neconomic activities. It will reduce the rate of unemployment in the
\nstate.”<\/p>\n
The Information and Communications Commissioner also said N7. 6 billion
\nhas been released to enable the College of Medical Sciences of RSU to
\nestablish the Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences,\u00a0 Faculty of Clinical
\nSciences and Pathology Building.<\/p>\n
With the release, Nsirim said, the college will be enabled to fully
\ncommence its programme leading to the award of Bachelor of Medicine, and
\nBachelor of Surgery (MBBS).<\/p>\n
According to him, the gesture will also strengthen accredited department
\nand those due Accreditation at the Rivers State University Teaching
\nHospital (RSUTH).<\/p>\n
Nsirim also announced that the State Government has established a
\nscholarship scheme for Rivers indigenes studying at PAMO University of
\nMedical Sciences.<\/p>\n
This, he said, will provide Rivers children and other Nigerians access
\nto medical education in the state.<\/p>\n
“We are glad to share this good news with you at a time when governance
\nhas been grounded in most parts of the world because of covid-19.<\/p>\n
“This development will assist to reduce the gaps in the doctor to
\npatient ration in the state and country.<\/p>\n
“The Rivers State government under the visionary leadership of Governor
\nWike,\u00a0 as a responsive governor,\u00a0 is determined to contribute to reduce
\nthis gap thus the massive investment in the training of doctors.<\/p>\n
“We are confident that in the next few years,\u00a0 Rivers State will play a
\nmajor role producing medical manpower in the country. ”<\/p>\n
Also addressing the journalists, Rivers State Commissioners for Health,
\nProf.\u00a0 Princewill Chike said with the release of the fund, the College
\nof Medical Sciences can operate as a full-fledged college with all its
\nrequired programmes running.<\/p>\n
According to him, accreditation of departments and programmes will be
\neasy to secure because of the enhanced capacity of the college that
\nalready has requisite personnel engaged.<\/p>\n
On his part, the Rivers State Commissioner for Education,\u00a0 Prof. Kaniye
\nEbeku said skeptics who thought that Governor Wike was making mere
\npolitical statement when he promised to establish three new campuses for
\nthe Rivers State University will see that he is walking the talk.<\/p>\n
According to him,\u00a0 with the money released and contractors soon to
\ncommence construction of Classrooms,\u00a0 hostels,\u00a0 auditoriums and offices
\nat the three Local Government Areas, there is an assured expansion of
\nRSU to benefit the entire state.<\/p>\n
Prof. Ebeku said this will increase access to education because
\nadmission spaces will be opened for more intakes, and those communities
\nhosting the new campuses will enjoy increase commercial activities and
