The Senate on Tuesday urged Security Agencies to actively deploy drones
\nand helicopters to monitor forests and unguarded areas in Nigeria to
\nidentify illegal camps of bandits.<\/p>\n
This was part of its resolutions following its adoption of a motion on
\nthe \u201cGeneral Insecurity in Nigeria\u201d sponsored by Sen. Ajayi Boroffice
\n(APC Ondo) and co-sponsored by 106 other senators.<\/p>\n
President of the Senate Ahmad Lawan in his remark said the National
\nAssembly would continue to talk about the security situation in the
\ncountry, adding that there was need to deploy more resources to fight
\ninsecurity.<\/p>\n
Lawan also said the state governors and local governments\u2019 authorities
\nshould be fully involved in the fight against insecurity to compliment
\nthe effort of the Federal Government.<\/p>\n
He, however, urged the Federal Government to further equip security
\nagencies to adequately combat insecurity in the country.<\/p>\n
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the adoption came weeks
\nafter President Muhammadu Buhari had nominated new Service Chiefs to
\nspearhead new drive to curb all forms of insecurity and brigandage in
\ndifferent parts of the country.<\/p>\n
The Senate also urged President Muhammadu Buhari to direct the National
\nSecurity Adviser, the newly-nominated Service Chiefs, and the
\nInspector-General of Police to devise measures to reposition the
\nnation\u2019s security architecture for effective counter measures against
\ninsecurity.<\/p>\n
It also urged State Governors to immediately embark on an operation to
\ncheckmate proliferation of firearms and enforce the laws against illegal
\nproliferation of firearms by arresting and punishing culprits.<\/p>\n
It also urged the Federal Government to re-invigorate rural governance
\nand convene state-wide inter communal conclaves and dialogues to promote
\nlocal conflicts resolution and inter-ethnic harmony.<\/p>\n
It urged state governors to implement the National Livestock
\nTransformation Plan, a modern scheme designed to prevent farmers-herders
\nconflicts and activate highly productive livestock sector in Nigeria.<\/p>\n
The Senate also urged the federal government to adequately equip the
\nNigeria Immigration Service (NIS) and the Nigerian Customs Service (NCS)
\nto police and monitor the borders using technology to check illegal
\nimmigrants and checkmate smuggling of fire arms.<\/p>\n
It further urged the federal government to resuscitate and inaugurate
\nthe National Task Force Commission to combat the proliferation of light
\nweapons, small arms and ammunition.<\/p>\n
Boroffice in his presentation decried the killings and kidnappings in
\nOndo, Edo, Oyo, Imo, Kaduna, Zamfara, Niger, Nasarawa, Kebbi and other
\nparts of the country.<\/p>\n
He said the recurring security challenges in parts of the country had
\nled to issuance of unlawful eviction notices by some ethnic
\nentrepreneurs and groups posing as ethnic nationalists and champions.<\/p>\n
He expressed worry that many Nigerians had injected ethnic sentiments,
\nadding that the development was capable of plunging the nation into
\nethno-religious crisis.<\/p>\n
He also expressed concern that if the current state of insecurity across
\nthe nation was not curtailed it could lead to food insecurity and famine
\nas many farmers no longer accessed their farmlands.<\/p>\n
He said it was the responsibility of all leaders at all levels to
\naddress the security challenges of Nigeria, adding that the local actors
\nand authorities should not absolve themselves of their responsibilities.<\/p>\n
He condemned the extra-judicial killings, banditry, kidnappings in
\nNigeria, saying that every Nigerian has the right to live and acquire
\nproperty in any parts of the country.<\/p>\n
Senators, who contributed to the motion hinged on the need to ensure
\ncommunity policing, arrest and prosecute perpetrators of banditry and
\nother forms of criminality in the country.<\/p>\n
They also emphasised the need to further equip the security
