{"id":78449,"date":"2021-02-16T18:40:06","date_gmt":"2021-02-16T17:40:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/?p=78449"},"modified":"2021-02-16T18:40:06","modified_gmt":"2021-02-16T17:40:06","slug":"nddc-plans-post-graduate-scholarships-in-nigerian-universities","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/other-news\/nddc-plans-post-graduate-scholarships-in-nigerian-universities\/","title":{"rendered":"NDDC Plans Post Graduate Scholarships in  Nigerian Universities"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"msg-body P_wpofO mq_AS\" data-test-id=\"message-view-body-content\">\n<div class=\"jb_0 X_6MGW N_6Fd5\">\n<div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">The Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, says it is making plans to<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">run its post graduate scholarship programme in Nigerian universities,<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">especially those in the Niger Delta region.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">This was disclosed by the NDDC Interim Administrator, Mr. Efiong Akwa,<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">during a courtesy visit by a delegation from University of Port<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">Harcourt, UNIPORT, led by the Acting Vice Chancellor, Professor Stephen<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">Okodudu, at the NDDC permanent headquarters in Port Harcourt.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">Akwa, who was reacting to a request by the Vice Chancellor for another<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">hostel in the university, promised to assist in elevating the<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">educational institutions in the Niger Delta region to make them suitable<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">for the post graduate programme.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">The NDDC boss observed that in an era of Covid-19 pandemic, it was<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">necessary to assist universities to properly and comfortably accommodate<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">students in order to ensure sufficient provision for social distancing<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">in the hostels.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">He told the Vice Chancellor that the university&#8217;s request would be taken<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">care of in the 2022 budget of the NDDC, describing UNIPORT as a flagship<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">university in the Niger Delta region.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">Akwa advised the university to write formally to the Commission for<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">appropriate budgetary provisions and presentation to the budget<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">committee of the National Assembly.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">He expressed confidence that the National Assembly would be willing to<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">accommodate the request since the project would impact on the quality of<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">the learning environment, as well as the welfare of the students.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">Akwa noted that the University of Port Harcourt was playing a crucial<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">role in the economy of the South-South region. According to him, &#8220;the<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">university has done a whole lot of work in research, engineering and<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">other disciplines, providing data and baseline studies for the good of<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">our country.&#8221;<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">Akwa decried the current dilapidated condition of the existing NDDC<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">hostel in the university, noting that authorities of the institution<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">should take responsibility for management and maintenance of the<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">facility.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">He said further: &#8220;When we deliver a project and hand over to an<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">institution or community, we also hand over the responsibility of<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">maintaining and managing the project. It is unfortunate that most<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">Nigerian managers don&#8217;t take issues of maintaining government facilities<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">seriously. It is regrettable that the university has not effectively<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">managed the hostel for the use of students.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">He advised the university to carry out remedial works on the hostel that<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">has been handed over to them to encourage the NDDC to do more for them.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">Speaking earlier, the Acting Vice Chancellor of UNIPORT, Professor<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">Stephen Okodudu, appealed to the NDDC to assist the university to ease<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">the pressure of accommodation by building another hostel for them.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">He said: &#8220;The University of Port Harcourt is supposed to be one of the<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">beneficiaries of your intervention efforts as a Commission. We do have a<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">robust relationship with the NDDC but the presence of the Commission in<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">the University is not up to what we expect.&#8221;<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">Apart from the 522 bed-space hostel at UNIPORT, the NDDC had built and<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">handed over seven other completed prototype hostels to the Rivers State<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">University, Port Harcourt, the University of Benin, Imo State<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">University, Federal University of Science and Technology, Owerri.
