General Muhammadu Buhari\u2019s recent surprise nomination of his immediate<\/div>\n
past service chiefs as non-career ambassadors has continued to generate<\/div>\n
serious reactions some of which are actually interesting while most are<\/div>\n
either naive or outrightly bizarre. Whatever the case, it is another<\/div>\n
milestone in this government\u2019s usual deliberate progress in error.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Whether anybody wants to hear this or not, no leader in this country in<\/div>\n
my lifetime has exceeded Buhari\u2019s parochialism and provocative<\/div>\n
indifference to public opinion that is if he is actually responsible for<\/div>\n
most of the irresponsible decisions and actions of his government.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Whatever the case, once again the regime\u2019s corruption and abuse of<\/div>\n
power for personal politics of self preservation instead of national<\/div>\n
interest is obvious for the whole world to see.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
The President had in a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and<\/div>\n
Publicity, Femi Adesina, announced General Abayomi Olonisakin (Rtd), Lt.<\/div>\n
General Tukur Buratai (Rtd), Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (Rtd), Air<\/div>\n
Marshal Sadique Abubakar (Rtd), and Air Vice Marshal Mohammed Usman<\/div>\n
(Rtd), as envoy designates.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Curiously, their nominations came just one week after they were sacked<\/div>\n
from service and their replacements inaugurated.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
As alleged, their nominations as envoys by General Buhari (rtd) is meant<\/div>\n
to dress them in diplomatic immunity in order to shield them from<\/div>\n
investigation and prosecution by the International Criminal Court (ICC)<\/div>\n
already probing the varied atrocities and crimes against humanity the<\/div>\n
ex-Service Chiefs may have individually or collectively perpetrated<\/div>\n
while in office.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Recall that the Senate in the last few months in what could best be<\/div>\n
described as \u201crepetition of resolution\u201d on insecurity had asked<\/div>\n
General Buhari to immediately sack this same crop of Service Chiefs who<\/div>\n
they say were bereft of new ideas to tackle insurgency and banditry and<\/div>\n
replace them with new ones with fresh ideas and solutions.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
These former service chiefs were supposed to have been fired or rather<\/div>\n
replaced long ago, but because we have a president who has an<\/div>\n
unbreakable covenant with absurdities and glaring failures, they were<\/div>\n
retained in defiance of three clear resolutions of the National Assembly<\/div>\n
and the opinions of most Nigerians.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
We have not forgotten that two of these ex-service chiefs achieved a<\/div>\n
milestone in their dubious distinction of institutionalizing crass<\/div>\n
corruption and cronyism by building universities in their homes towns<\/div>\n
instead of securing the country from terrorism.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
This nomination shows that it has become habitual for General Buhari to<\/div>\n
reward incompetence. Only recently, he appointed a new Chief of Army<\/div>\n
Staff who was sacked in 2017 by former ex-Chief of Army Staff, General<\/div>\n
Buratai, for incompetence.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Interestingly, this absurd appointment is now subject to confirmation by<\/div>\n
the Senate and this where the bigger mess lies.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Going by what we have seen from the Senate, only few Nigerians may be<\/div>\n
expecting to see the Senate reject any of those nominations. But this is<\/div>\n
where the real blunder would be committed in making more nonsense of our<\/div>\n
democratic experiment that has only succeeded in making this nation a<\/div>\n
laughing stock in the comity of democratic nations.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
So The Senate that recommended the removal of these same service chiefs<\/div>\n
for failure and gross incompetence will be the same Senate to screen<\/div>\n
them as Ambassadors. What a country we have come to have!<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
If the Senate has an iota of self-respect and decency, should they even<\/div>\n
bother screening these ex-service chiefs for ambassadorial appointments?<\/div>\n
They should just let them go and live their private lives in retirement<\/div>\n
from public service.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Can this Senate be trusted for once to put national interest and pride<\/div>\n
first by asking these ex-service chiefs to go and rest after all<\/div>\n
they\u2019ve really put in their best in their service to the nation. If<\/div>\n
the particular assignment must be handled by ex-military men, there are<\/div>\n
several Generals that were relieved from duties to enable the new<\/div>\n
service chief take over, why is the government not considering some of<\/div>\n
them rather than the three that has been in office all these years with<\/div>\n
not-too-convincing or rather impressive performance in the assignment.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
It was the height of insensitivity and outright insult on the<\/div>\n
sensibility of Nigerians for the Presidency to affirm that \u201cThe<\/div>\n
President is rewarding hard work and exceptional sacrifice by a set of<\/div>\n
military leaders who gave their best to the nation and will be<\/div>\n
remembered, sooner than later, for their contributions to the security<\/div>\n
and survival of Nigeria as one nation. They should be allowed to move to<\/div>\n
the next level. This is so that their examples will help to inspire<\/div>\n
others if given the opportunity to serve.\u201d<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
The world has gone past the era where inept and\/or corrupt public<\/div>\n
officials whether politicians or military chiefs can be considered fit<\/div>\n
and proper persons to represent a democratic country in the conduct of<\/div>\n
high-wired diplomatic business. Are there no other well qualified men<\/div>\n
and women in this country?<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Simply because those who run this current Nigerian government always do<\/div>\n
things that portray them as very hollow, disorganised and at best smart<\/div>\n
only by ten percent, the manner of the nomination is being interpreted<\/div>\n
to suggest it was done as an immoral attempt solely for the sake of<\/div>\n
shielding the ex-service chiefs from prosecution at the International<\/div>\n
Criminal Court of Justice (ICC) by conferring diplomatic immunity on<\/div>\n
them.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Without mincing words, those calling for the prosecution of the former<\/div>\n
service chiefs base on alleged human rights abuses are also not very<\/div>\n
fair to them and the sacrifices they made in service to the nation.<\/div>\n
Human rights abuse in a war situation actually depends on the covert aim<\/div>\n
of whoever is doing the definition. Getting over one thousand men firing<\/div>\n
machine machineguns, rifles and also bombs all at once, there is no way<\/div>\n
that all the fires will end up rightly or friendly.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
The direction that whosoever loves Nigeria should be looking is the<\/div>\n
alleged corrupt practices especially diversion of the billions of<\/div>\n
dollars allocated to prosecute the war against insurgency and banditry<\/div>\n
by these ex-service chiefs during their reign in office. That is where<\/div>\n
the case is and it can easily be established and prosecuted if it\u2019s<\/div>\n
taken up seriously.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
But for these men with such huge baggage of administrative<\/div>\n
impropriety\/incompetence and history of abysmal failures to be chosen as<\/div>\n
the nation\u2019s best to bring political and economic laurel at home or at<\/div>\n
the international arena is a No! No!\u00a0 Are there no more qualified men<\/div>\n
and women in this country? Must it be the same persons? _Haba,<\/div>\n
