No fewer than four persons were killed and many houses burnt in intra-<\/div>\n
communal crisis between Ogwuikpele community in Ogbaru and Azia<\/div>\n
community in Ihiala Local Government Areas of Anambra state.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
The duo were quarreling over a levy from an oil exploring company in the<\/div>\n
area<\/div>\n
which have caused many residents to flee Ogwuikpele, an oil-rich<\/div>\n
community as a result of the disturbances.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Sequel to a matter presented under Matters of Urgent Public Importance<\/div>\n
by Mr Somtochukwu Udeze representing Ogbaru 2 Constituency, lawmakers<\/div>\n
have requested the state government to send security agencies to resolve<\/div>\n
the disturbances.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Udeze said the level of wanton destruction of lives on Feb. 12, 2021,<\/div>\n
where four persons were murdered in Ogwuikpele community required<\/div>\n
immediate resolution.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
“We are still in shock and asking questions on what happened on Feb.<\/div>\n
12, when the houses and belongings of these murdered people were set on<\/div>\n
fire along with other houses.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
“This cruel and unwarranted loss of lives, have become unbearable in my<\/div>\n
constituency,” he said.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Udeze also drew the attention of the House to a similar incident in the<\/div>\n
same community that happened in November 2020, where two lives were<\/div>\n
lost.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
“People have deserted the community as a result of the disturbances.<\/div>\n
The neighbouring towns within my constituency are currently harbouring a<\/div>\n
lot of people, especially from Ogwuikpele, Obeagbor and Obianocha<\/div>\n
communities.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
“Some have been moved to Onitsha as a result of the killings in<\/div>\n
Ogwuikpele.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
“It is true oil is discovered in my constituency, but the trend and<\/div>\n
attitude of some agencies regarding this issue is not anything to write<\/div>\n
home about.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
“I urge that this House to call on Gov. Willie Obiano to as a matter of<\/div>\n
urgency to direct all relevant security agencies to intervene in the<\/div>\n
happenings at Ogwuikpele to restore law and order.”<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Mr Lawrence Ezeudu representing Dunukofia state constituency noted that<\/div>\n
the area would soon become an oil producing area of Anambra.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
According to him, we know very well that there are some activities going<\/div>\n
on there. Already there are companies that we know that are drilling oil<\/div>\n
in that part of the state.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
“That place has become the real oil spinner for Anambra State, this is<\/div>\n
what is expected, we have to as a Matter of Urgency, nip this issue in<\/div>\n
the board, now that this incident is below the knee,” Ezeudu advised.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
He, however, urged that various security agencies including the<\/div>\n
Vigilance group in that area rise to secure Ogwuikpele community,<\/div>\n
stressing that if nothing is done, the incident might deteriorate and<\/div>\n
subsume a larger population.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
“Ogbaru LGA is largely known for agriculture and we cannot because of<\/div>\n
oil, allow that area to disintegrate and be<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Consequently, Anambra State House of Assembly has called on Gov. Willie<\/div>\n
Obiano urgently direct the relevant security agencies to intervene in<\/div>\n
the two warring communities.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
The House resolved that this would help to restore order in the two LGAs<\/div>\n
in the state.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
For sustainable peace in the state, the lawmakers also urged that a<\/div>\n
committee of enquiry be set up over the disturbances.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
The Speaker of the House, Mr Uche Okafor, has described the incidences<\/div>\n
as pathetic and worrisome, given the manner in which Udeze stood to<\/div>\n
narrate the experiences of his constituents in the Ogwuikpele community<\/div>\n
crisis.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
“I can feel the pulse of the members when the deputy Speaker relayed<\/div>\n
what also happened at Azia; it becomes worrisome.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
“What seems to be a blessing to us which is oil should not turn around<\/div>\n
to be a curse on us. We pray to have oil as part of our resources<\/div>\n
because it is going to help to improve the economic drive of the state.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
“Now that Anambra is working toward that, we will not think that it<\/div>\n
will be a curse that will make us kill ourselves,” the Speaker said.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Mr Paschal Agbodike representing Ihiala 2 state constituency expressed<\/div>\n
dismay over the cult related killings in his area, saying that two<\/div>\n
persons were killed in Azia community.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Agbodike, a deputy Speaker enjoined all to cooperate to put an end to<\/div>\n
these gruesome murders.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Mr Pete Ibida representing Njikoka 2 constituency described the<\/div>\n
situation as pathetic, saying that people were heartless and if allowed<\/div>\n
could lead to the decimation of the community.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Meanwhile, the State Police Command Public Relations Officer, CSP Haruna<\/div>\n
Mohammed had said it had restored normalcy and intensify joint patrols<\/div>\n
to forestall reoccurrence in the area.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
He said, on Feb. 12, 2021 at about 11:19pm, there was a report of<\/div>\n
intra-communal crisis in Ogwuikpele community by the Council Chairman \u00f2f<\/div>\n
Ogbaru LGA of Anambra State Hon.Arinzechukwu Awogu over a levy from an<\/div>\n
oil exploring company in the Community.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
He said the Command quickly dispatched joint Police teams comprising<\/div>\n
PMF\/RRS and other Conventional Units in collaboration with the local<\/div>\n
Community Vigilante group led by the Area Commander Oraifite, ACP<\/div>\n
Wilfred Afolabi to the scene and met virtually half of the Community<\/div>\n
deserted.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
“Situation was brought under control and normalcy restored in the area.<\/div>\n
Joint patrols are ongoing to reassure fleeing residents to return to the<\/div>\n
Community and ensure lasting\u00a0 peace in the area,” he said.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Mohammed said that investigation had commenced in earnest to ascertain<\/div>\n
number of lives lost, injuries sustained, damage to property,<\/div>\n
circumstances surrounding the incident, identify and bring perpetrators<\/div>\n
to book.<\/div>\n

He appealed to the fleeing residents to return to the community since<\/div>\n
normalcy has been restored and warns restive factions to maintain peace<\/div>\n
